BOOKS: The Belterra Saga by Carol Ann Kauffman

The
   BELTERRA
      Saga

Belterra
Dark Return

A Coming of Age Fantasy, Sci-fi Romantic Adventure

The Time After Time Series follows a pair of unlikely lovers on their adventures through their many lifetimes together. This time the couple is reborn on an alien planet, Belterra. The law forbids not only intermarriage, but interaction between the four clans is discouraged.

Will fate guide them to each other?

Braedon, Lord of the Soldier Clan of the East, often dreamed of a beautiful blonde woman. When he rode into the lavender fields of the West searching for her, he had no idea if she was even real. But there she was, Neeka, daughter of the Lord of the Warrior Clan, waiting for him.

He reached out to her and she accepted his hand, as memories of their previous lives flooded their minds and love warmed their hearts.

Fate can’t keep them apart. What they have is more than love. They’re eternal soulmates. Their everlasting love survived many lifetimes but never without sacrifice and heartache. This lifetime will not be any different.

Can one person make a difference?

Against all odds, the hatred among the clans, her father’s disapproval, and the power-hungry, evil scientists, Neeka fights for their love and the right to be together, changing not only their lives but the course of life, love, freedom, and the political structure of their planet forever.

If you liked Belterra, then fast forward ten years. Neeka and Braedon are still fighting to save the planet... and each other:

Dark Return is the sequel to Belterra, Time After Time, and takes place about ten years afterwards. When Belterra was populated long ago by a select group of humans sent here by the ancients in the hope of saving the human race, the indigenous race of bat-like creatures called the Batrach were forced into the ocean and underground sea caves by a giant force field. The force field has now weakened. The Batrach have emerged from their watery prison and they want their planet back.

INTERVIEW: Romantic Suspense Author Dellani Oakes

Dellani Oakes
Daytona Beach, FL
USA

Good morning, Dellani, and welcome to Vision and Verse. Can you tell us a little about what you've written?
I have written over 100 books -- mostly romance and romantic suspense. I also have written a sci-fi series, a fantasy series and a mystery series.

What is your favorite genre to write?
I think romantic suspense is my favorite, with a strong second being romance.

Favorite food.
I don’t really have one, though I’m very partial to baklava.

Tea or coffee?
I like both, but I’m partial to coffee.

Pizza or ice cream?
Both!

Wine or beer?
I am not a fan of beer. However, I love wine.

Where would you like to visit?
I’d love to see the sights like Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone Park, and many others. I’d also love to visit the UK, Australia and Canada.

Favorite musical artist.  Do you listen to music when you write?  What?
I listen to all kinds of music when I write. I have so many groups that I love, but I am very partial to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and The Main Squeeze.

What makes you laugh?
So many things. I think it’s important to find humor in everything that you can.

Favorite work of art or sculpture.
I don’t have a particular favorite, but I am very fond of Starry Night - Vincent Van Gogh, and Little Dancer of Fourteen Years -- Edgar Degas.

How old were you when you started writing?
I started telling stories as a small child. I moved on to (terrible) poems and short stories by the time I was 9. Short stories became longer stories. I started my first novel in 1989, and no, it’s not finished yet.

Do you plan out your book with outlines and notecards? Or just write?
I don’t outline or plan anything. I get an idea, and run with it until it gives up on me.

Describe your perfect evening.
A perfect evening is spending time with my husband and sons, drinking wine, or beer in their case, and playing Cards Against Humanity or Exploding Kittens.

Where do you get your inspiration?
There is inspiration in everything. Sometimes, it’s something I see, or overhear. Other times, I hear a voice nagging at me.

What do you do when you get a writer's block?
I either move on to something else, or I read through things I’ve already written, to edit.

Who is your favorite author?
I have so many, I can’t possibly list them all. If pressed, I’ll say Shakespeare, but only if I’m forced.

Best book you ever read.
There are so many, I can’t list them either. Several stand out, though: Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle, Star Man’s Son by Andre Norton.

Last book you read.
The Bishop’s Tale by Margaret Frazer.

What would you do for a living if you weren’t a writer?
I was a high school English teacher. I suppose I’d be doing that.

Who is the one person who has influenced your personal life the most and why?
My mother. She was always creative, interested in a variety of things, and supportive of my own creative efforts. At 100 years old, and suffering from dementia, she still inspires me.

If you could sit down and have a conversation with ONE person, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be and why?
Here again, there are so many, I’m not entirely sure. I do think I’d like to have a conversation with my dad. He’s been gone a lot of years, and it would be interesting to see him again.

What advice would you give someone who aspired to be a writer?
Keep doing what you love, even if you don’t make a lot of money on it.

BOOK REVIEW: Bag Ladies by Jean Lant

My Review:
If you’re looking for something different to read, then Bag Ladies is for you. Truly, this needs to be a stage play! Inspired by true life events, Bag Ladies  is fiction mixed with harrowing, real life experiences of working for a crooked boss, having to testify, and being harassed by criminals. It’s every decent person’s nightmare. The fact that it’s set in Las Vegas and Texas only adds to the speculation. Lant’s style of writing pulls the reader right into the story. We feel sorry for office workers Ginny and poor Buttons for being used and manipulated by some very crooked people. The story leaves you wondering...
