BOOK: Harper Ross by Carol Ann Kauffman

Harper Ross is a quiet, shy man born to wealth and privilege; not large, not strong, not what you'd call hero material.

Katy Westwind finds herself in danger from the cruel sheriff of Bellwood.

If that's not bad enough, there's a giant monster that flies down into the town once every ten years and devours everyone and everything it finds.

Town council has organized a lottery to choose a man to kill the monster before it awakens.

The lottery is, of course, fixed.

If you’re looking for something different to read, Harper Ross
is a sci-fi western fantasy romance that will fill the bill. It has
bad guys and romance. It has steampunky inventions and a crooked
sheriff. It has a historic library and a flying dragon. And it has heart. ♥️

TV TIME: Dark Winds, Season 3 (AMC)

If you haven't seen the series Dark Winds yet, you're missing the best series on television in years. It is so much more than a well-done Navajo Police Procedural.

It steps into the mind and heart of its main character,  Joe Leaphorn, as he navigates crime and justice on the Navajo Reservation with his deputies.

It's happy. It's beautiful. It's dark. It's scary. All at the same time.

It stars the wonderfully talented Zahn McClarnon as Joe Leaphorn. The stories are based on the gripping Southwest tales of Tony Hillerman and Ann Hillerman.

INTERVIEW: Historical Fiction Author Veronica Leigh

Veronica Leigh

Terre Haute, Indiana

USA

Good morning, Veronica, and welcome to Vision and Verse. What have you written?

I in multiple genres: historical fiction, mysteries/crime fiction, horror fiction, fantasy fiction, and inspirational Christian essays.

What is your favorite genre to write?

Probably historical fiction. It’s the only way I can time travel since I haven’t been able to get my hands on a time travel machine.

Favorite food.

Pizza. I could eat it every day.

Tea or coffee?

Coffee, with a lot of flavored creamer.

Pizza or ice cream?

I can’t decide, I love both dearly. What I need is for someone to come up with a pizza flavored ice cream. LOL!

Wine or beer or soda?

I don’t drink alcohol, so soda. Root beers preferably.

Where would you like to visit?

I’d love to go to England and visit Austen’s house and the Bronte Parsonage.

Favorite musical artist. Do you listen to music when you write?  What?

My favorite singer is Judy Garland. I sometimes listen to movie soundtracks while I write.

What makes you laugh?

Animals…they’re adorable. They can always bring a smile to my face and make me laugh.

Favorite work of art or sculpture.

I love the portrait of Dido Belle Lindsay and Elizabeth Murray. It’s gorgeous. The story behind it all is equally fascinating.

How old were you when you started writing?

I wrote my first story when I was six years old; it didn’t have any words though so it was more of a picture book. I started writing more seriously, with publication in mind when I was eleven.

Do you plan out your book with outlines and notecards? Or just writer?

I generally do outlines, whether the piece is long or short. It’s rare for me to just sit down and write.

Describe your perfect evening.

It’s springtime and I’m sitting on the front porch drinking tea, enjoying the quiet, reading and writing until it’s dark.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Usually when I’m at work and my mind is wandering, inspiration will strike. I’ll have an idea, or hear a phrase, or think of a description, and I’ll have to write myself a note so that I won’t forget.

What do you do when you get a writer's block?

I it out and it eventually passes. In the mean time I revise an older story, or I read. As I said, it passes and the muse returns.

Who is your favorite author?

Jane Austen.

Best book you ever read.

I have too many favorites to choose just one…The Bible, Pride and Prejudice, The Diary of Anne Frank, To Kill a Mockingbird…I return to those books time and time again.

Last book you read.

“Cecilia,” by Frances Burney.

What would you do for a living if you weren’t a writer?

What I do now: I’m a housekeeper at a nursing home. Though I’ve had many publishing successes the last couple of years, there’s no way I could live on what I make through writing. So, by day I’m a housekeeper and by night I’m a writer.

Who is the one person who has influenced your personal life the most and why?

Probably my mom. She gave me life, she is a fantastic mother, she’s been there for me during the good and the bad times, she’s always been supportive about my writing dreams.

If you could sit down and have a conversation with ONE person, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be and why?

Probably Jane Austen. Though I’d be scared that she’d write a ridiculous character based on me and then generations of her fans would laugh at me.

What advice would you give someone who aspired to be a writer?

Never give up and step out of your comfort zone. Stepping out of my comfort zone, changing genres, trying something new – that’s how I found my little bit of success.

Do you have anything you want to announce at this time?

The only think I have to announce/publicize is that sometime this year, hopefully this spring, I want to publish my novel, “The Judgment of Solomon” through Amazon KDP. But I’m still in the revision process, so there are no links or blurbs or covers just yet.

Come back when The Judgment of Solomon comes out. Bring the cover and an excerpt for my readers!
