The Cat Collier Mystery Series by Carol Ann Kauffman

The Cat Collier Mystery Series is a collections of short stories with a 1940's flavor about a small town detective. It has been called "Nancy Drew meets Mike Hammer."

JANUARY BLACK ICE
Mary Catherine Collier is called to the penthouse apartment of the city’s very rich, most influential lawyer, Detrick Bittmor. He has a very personal assignment for her. It involves a mysterious young man who sits on a park bench every day at noon and stares up at Bittmor’s top floor apartment.

Mary Catherine, or Cat, as she’s better known, has a soft spot for this lawyer with a nasty reputation. There’s something about this old man she likes, and even finds charming.

Detrick Bittmor thinks the young man on the park bench resembles a younger version of himself. He thinks this young man could be his son from an affair he had many years ago with a beautiful New Year lawyer. This man could be his only heir.

And old man Bittmor isn’t getting any younger.

FEBRUARY WHITE LIES
Join Cat Collier from January Black Ice as she starts her own detective agency, Red Cat Investigations, inside the gorgeous old Palazzo Castellano Hotel and solves her first real paid case, the case of Shotzie, the missing French poodle. Just when she feels she is destined to find lost pets and missing luggage for the rest of her life in her beautiful new office, complete with business cards, magazines in the waiting room, and her Red Cat logo painted on the frosted glass door, a lovely, mysterious woman named Ms. White hires her to find out who is stalking her. A dead rat on her car. Being run off the road. A car bombing. Someone wants her frightened or maybe…dead.

The trail of graft and corruption leads Cat into danger as she hides the mystery woman with the old, reclusive lawyer Detrick Bittmor for safe keeping.

Cat’s relationship with the handsome Erick “Carter” Larsen is put in jeopardy when she teams up with Officer Kiernan Scott from the Heaton Valley Police Department to unravel the mystery in February White Lies.

MARCH BLUES
Small-town red-head Cat Collier runs an private investigation service called Red Cat Investigation out of her office in the beautiful Palazzo Castellano with the help of her secretary, Nola White, an ex-client Cat took in because she had nowhere else to go, her boyfriend, Erick “Carter” Larsen, and Carter’s father, the wealthy, influential, and shady lawyer, Detrick Bittmor.
In this third installment of the Cat Collier Mystery series, after escaping from captivity in an abandoned train car, Cat stumbles upon a homeless man at the long deserted train station, who helps her get home to Carter. Detrick discovers he knows this homeless man as the one-time legendary saxophone player who played in the downstairs bar when they were both young and the family embarks on rehabilitating the sax player and reopening the bar, “The Blues.”

APRIL YELLOW MOON
In this fourth installment in the Cat Collier Short Story Mystery Series, a dear, old friend comes up missing and Cat Collier must scramble to find her before it's too late. A powerful enemy resurfaces and claims responsibility for a personal attack on Cat's family. Nola relives Trent's murder. Carter proposes...again.

Children of the Future by Jane Suen was a delightful surprise for me. As a former primary schoolteacher, I picked up this book because it had a school bus in the cover. And then I could not put it down. A bus driver shows up to pick up the children after school. But no one is there. This X-Files-type mystery is every parent and teacher's worst nightmare. Jane Suen kept me guessing until the very end.

Interview with Found Wood Sculptor Eyevan Tumbleweed

Eyevan Tumbleweed
Given Name: Bennett Ewing
Occidental, CA

Good morning, Eyevan, and welcome to Vision and Verse, the Place for Art and Authors. It's our pleasure to have you here with us. Your work is eye-catching and unforgettable. Haunting, even.
How would you describe your artwork?
Although I'm known to illustrate, do ceramic figure work, metal sculpture, storytelling, comedy screenwriting, and song writing, my primary medium is found wood sculpture. What I do with the medium is probably technically considered assemblage art and is created from found wood of all geographic biomes so far accessible to me. Subject-wise my prime focus has been realistic scale faces, so far mostly relief (comprised from virtually unaltered wood found in its natural state,
that is to say non carved nor colored). Although I have stayed consistent with relief
face and head forms I do, however, have plans for 360 degree heads, busts and
full body projects. I have created over twenty finished works. I hope to eventually stray a little from the human form and scale, exploring where else the medium may take me.

What is your favorite medium to work with?
Found, weathered wood.

Favorite food.
Sushi, more specifically Uni or sea urchin.

Tea or coffee.
Coffee

Pizza or ice cream.
Pizza

Where would you like to visit?
Scandinavia, specifically Finland. Scotland. Indonesia. Japan. Africa. Australia.
That would be naming only a few off the top of my head.

Favorite musical artist. Do you listen to music when you work? What?
Maybe Tom Waits. I love a lot of genres of music and have written 800 of my own
songs however I seldom listen to music when I work on art. I usually would regard
it as a distraction to my process, during which I like to tune everything else but the
art out. If I'm doing other kinds of work meaning work that is not art I enjoy music.

What makes you laugh?
Honesty especially in regards to shameful behavior or in self effacing contexts
makes me laugh. Inappropriate things, disgusting things, awkward things, silly or
goofy things, charming things, puns, juxtaposed cultural concepts or spin offs of
things that existed first make me laugh. The list goes on; they are all generally up
my alley as far as laughing goes. My humor has a very broad range.

How old were you when you started creating art?
I was a very focused illustrator starting at age 2. I pretty much never stopped drawing until adolescence when I got distracted by other mediums. I was always fairly prolific but became more hyper-creative in a multifaceted sense around college age, even more so in my late twenties. It took until my mid twenties to focus on one project long enough to get the results that would propel me to the level I've been at in recent years.

Where do you get your inspiration?
I get my inspiration from life, where else? In order to narrow it down I suppose my inspiration comes from my materials. What nature makes in the form of wood and other materials is my main inspiration. In other words, the aesthetic values of wood in its natural states inspire me. Furthermore, I am inspired by the human face in its many varieties.

What do you do when you get artist's block?
I don't really get artist's block. I reach a point from time to time where I'm too exhausted to continue binge creating but as soon as I'm rested I can pretty much get right into it just by messing around with the materials. My sessions aren't always relatively productive but the more I mess around with possibilities, the more I get done in the long run. I usually have more projects cut out for myself
than I can handle and that goes for several mediums of art including music. I come up with ideas faster than I can start or finish them so a lot of things go on the back burners.

The other aspect of not being able to go any further with a given work in the found wood medium is running out of the right pieces of wood to advance. That's usually when I either switch to a different creative channel or set out to collect more wood from nature. Collecting wood is often a very physical, full day excursion, which happens around 3 times a week year round for the most part.

Who is your favorite artist?
Vincent Van Gogh

Favorite painting.
Van Gogh: Self portrait with a Gray Felt Hat

Favorite sculpture.
Perseus with the Head of Medusa by Benvenuto Cellini

Describe your perfect evening.
The perfect evening might be doing a mix of something creative with no sense of rush, preferably followed up by something outdoors or in the company of interesting, witty inspiring people. It might involve comedy of some kind and
perhaps a hot tub or hot spring. I'd throw some good food, alcohol and
entertainment in there. It could involve adventure, romance, travel or something novel. The evening wouldn't be perfect if the variables that constitute perfect didn't change from one perfect evening to the next.

What would you be doing for a living if it weren’t what you’re doing now?
I would be in another creative career whether it be art of other mediums which I
already do but could devote more time and energy to. I have some inventions I'm
working on but writing for or doing creative development for movies or TV would
be a good fit. I also would consider focusing more on comedic song writing, hip
hop being my niche.

Who is the one person who has influenced your personal life the most and why?
If not Tom Robbins, the author, maybe Joseph Campbell, the mythologist. I choose to mention them for two different reasons. Mr Robbins as an affirmation of
a fun and creative life style where dreams can be manifested and there is an emphasis of experiencing the fullness of life. I've always had a big imagination and his work is a kind of celebration of imagination and what one can do with it. I think
he also has a lot of practical wisdom to offer.

Joseph Campbell has been influential by virtue of his various concepts. The example of the hero's journey, for instance, was helpful to me because it helped me see the bigger picture of my life and my path as an artist among other things. Much can be learned from myths, they are also fodder for the creative mind I think. I've learned from him to go with the flow of what I find interesting and compelling and to sample ideas in an interdisciplinary way.

If you could sit down and have a conversation with ONE person, living or dead,
real or fictional, who would it be and why?
I would like to talk to whoever is in charge of big budget fantasy movie productions
so I could pitch the idea of my found wood faces coming to life as characters in a
motion picture story. If I got an opportunity to meet someone like that I could
probably also get all my other movie ideas proposed to the right people. If I had
funding and connections there's no telling how many ideas from music to fashion I
could get off the ground nor what I could continue to generate.

What advice would you give someone who aspired to be an artist?
Be dedicated in your practice, steadfast in your endeavors and more enthralled by the process than the end result. Be willing to work with and learn from others that can help you get the exposure you need to thrive. Don't expect it to be easy. Expect to make many sacrifices if you wish to be the best you can be. Harness your passion and be disciplined.

BELTERRA by Carol Ann Kauffman

The Time After Time Series follows a pair of unlikely lovers on their adventures through life and love, this time on an alien planet divided into four tribes. When Neeka, daughter of the Lord of the Warrior Clan, was out picking lavender in their vast fields of the West, she felt him coming for her, and she was ready. When Braedon, Lord of the Soldier Clan of the East, rode into those lavender fields, searching for the woman of his dreams, he had no idea if she were even real. But there she was, standing there looking up at him, smiling. He reached his hand down to her and waited. She accepted his hand, beginning their adventures together, changing not only their lives, but the course of life and unity on their planet forever. An alien planet. Or is it?

on October 23, 2015
A soldier and a healer fight for their lives and for their love against an evil power-mad scientist, in a saga of thrilling and complicated adventures, with courage, honesty - and tenderness. This is the second book in the TIME AFTER TIME series, and the fourth one I've read. To me the order makes no difference, because we know that the two lovers will meet and love again and again. The others I've read were set in modern or near-modern times; this one is different in being set in some other world altogether, fantastic in some ways, but very believable in others. Some things about human nature don't change.
on March 17, 2015
This is an engaging romantic love story set in a post-apocalyptic period on an alien planet. High adventure reigns as the four different clans vie for power. Neeka, daughter of the Lord of the Warrior Clan runs away to be with her lover, Braedon, Lord of the Soldier Clan. Follow their adventures and the ups and downs of their romance as Neeka goes to battle with Braedon, putting her own life in danger. Carol Kauffman has crafted a very entertaining romance/adventure that will keep the reader wondering what will happen until the very end. The writing is concise and well-researched.

on August 2, 2013
The heroine, Neeka, and the hero, Braedon were often times just not meant to be together... One would think. With Braedon, Lord of the Soldier Clan, hot and sexy who could resist him as he stumbles through the bumpy road of love. It seems at every turn he is trying to prove he is worthy of the love of the daughter, of the Lord of the Warrior Clan.
In a world with plenty of action and adventure and romance, Belterra also has humor that I found endearing.
Sparks fly and several misunderstandings lead them down the road to a rough relationship that may or may not end in happiness. (No Spoilers from this reader) but I can't wait to read more.

Thank you Carol Ann Kauffman for leading me through a wonderful journey with Neeka and Braedon and the many other characters in this novel. Some of which deserve their own books (hint, hint)
I look forward to reading more from you.

on March 9, 2012
I think this books was throughly well written and insightful. I think the the world that this author created is lush and completely captivating. I wouldn't have thought this would be such an interesting science fiction novel, but I absolutely adore it. I am a pretty big science fiction buff, and this book would fit right in with the rest of my collection. I really loved Belterra and thought it makes a lovely story on it's own, but can't wait to read more from this author!

on March 5, 2012
I enjoyed this book. The references that the story took place in a post apocalyptic world sparked the science fiction geek in me. The interactions of the characters in this romantic action novel kept me interested and involved. There were also many humorous lines that added to my enjoyment while reading; i.e. "the last cookie on the tray";referring to choice of a man, made me laugh out loud. Great to read a book from a new author. Thank you Carol Kauffman. Looking forward to your next book. Could this be the start of a series?

on February 26, 2012
Belterra is a step into an enchanting world filled with romance, action, and adventure. The heroine, Neeka, and the hero, Braedon, share a dream of each other, but don't realize the world changing scale of the adventure their love will launch. This romance novel explores the heart and the soul, and the depths of what is right and what is wrong in the pursuit of burning ambition. This was the best romance/adventure novel I've ever read.

on February 22, 2012
I really loved this book. I think that it has such an interesting story line, and the time period is quite realistic and well researched. I would like to read more by this author in the near future, and wished I could get it as an actual book as well! Keep up the great work!
