BOOK REVIEW: Purple Kitty by Chariss K. Walker

Serena McKay, P.I., won't be your mother's favorite female sleuth. She’s certainly not of the Jessica Fletcher ilk and this is not a cozy mystery. Serena has suffered from devastating emotional and physical abuse. She lives in a post-apocalyptic time where existence is nightmarish at best and disastrously chilling at worst. As a strong, albeit dysfunctionally-flawed private investigator, Serena uses every weapon in her arsenal to solve bloodcurdling crimes in this hard-boiled, dark-fiction, dystopian thriller series All while a notorious serial killer is after her green eyes... The sequel, Blue Cadillac continues Serena's courageous story. Or you can read the two-book series in one download in Serena McKay Crime Novels Complete, Books 1-2, B07GCRT56R.

Purple Kitty by Chariss Walker is like no other crime story I’ve ever read. Set in a dark, disturbing future, former-cop-turned-private-investigator Serena McKay takes a case involving a missing child. Echoes from her past haunt her, as she juggles her caseload while preserving her life and sanity. Very well-written with wonderfully flawed characters, a dark and scary future, a heinous madman, and a riveting plot, this book will definitely hold your interest while taking you on one wild ride. I highly recommend this first book as I begin the second book in the series.

ENTERTAINMENT: The Mandalorian, Disney+

This live action SciFi series from Disney+ has everyone cooing over Baby Yoda.

All we really know is the tiny, adorable creature is the same species as Yoda and has already displayed a clear cut connection to the force.

The Mandalorian is a bit of a mystery. We know he’s a bounty hunter. We’ve seen him display some kick-ass martial arts techniques. We’ve seen him fight off scores of opponents with skill and accuracy.

What we haven’t seen yet, as of Episode 6, is his face. “Mando” has not removed his giant metal face helmet. I am not even sure the same guy has played Mando in all 6 episodes. I think it must be hard for an actor to convey emotion with his giant metal face helmet on.

That being said, I like the series. The special effects do their job. The references to the old Star Wars movies are fun. The bar in Los Isleys was a great throwback to the 1977 first Luke/Han meeting.

Unlike other series now streaming, Disney+ is dropping one new
episode a week, like old fashioned television in the pre-Netflix era.

Bottom line: We SciFi fans are starving for good or even mildly good series. We’ve had reruns and encore presentations. We NEED some new and exciting material, so I’m sticking with Mando!

Hugs,
Carol
