RENE FRANCOIS GHISLAIN MAGRITTE
Belgian artist, Rene Magritte, was born November 21, 1898 to a tailor and textile merchant father and housewife mother. He was the oldest of the family children who began drawing lessons at the age of 12. Little else is known about his childhood.
In 1912, his mother committed suicide, causing the family tremendous public humiliation, having made several failed attempts in the past. Soon after, Magritte began painting and by 1915 he'd completed his first impressionist painting. For the next two years he studied at the Academie Royale de Beaux Arts in Brussels. Thinking it a waste of time, he left the school. Magritte's paintings at this point were representative of the popular movements of the time, namely cubism and futurism.
In 1921 Magritte enlisted in the military and served in Leopoldsburg, Austria, and Antwerp. Leaving the service a year later he married childhood friend, Georgette Berger. His first job was with a wallpaper factory, designing posters and advertisements for the company. He sold his first art work, a portrait of singer Evelyn Brelin, in 1923. This opened the door to a contract at Galerie la Centaure, making him a full time artist.
Magritte's work now began reflecting his ideals as opposed to the popular movement of the time. Many associate his work with Surrealism, the movement where reality and imagination are fused together, confusing the viewers and forcing one to contemplate the image.
Rene's first exhibition in 1927 in Brussels turned out to be a flop. The critics hated all 61 pieces in the show. He moved to Paris with his wife where he befriended artists in the French community. Not long there, he moved back to Brussels and returned to work in the wallpaper factory.
The period between 1943 - 1944 brought a change in Magritte's work, reflecting the influence of impressionist painter Auguste Renoir. It was WWII and times were tough and to survive he resorted to forging copies of works by Picasso, Braque, and Chirico, which he sold to the Germans. After the war he returned to creating Surrealist art. One of his noted works at this time, "The Promenades of Euclid", he painted in 1955. It is a painting within a painting which tricks the viewer's eye into seeing it as just one image.
He once said of his paintings, "I paint visible images that conceal nothing, they evoke mystery, and indeed when one sees my pictures one asks oneself the simple question, 'What does it mean?' It doesn't mean anything because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable."
Rene Magritte's most recognizable work, painted in 1964, is titled "The Son of Man." This iconic painting features a man in a bowler hat and suit, with a green apple in front of his face. What does it mean? Like Magritte said, "It is unknowable." Magritte died in Brussels on August 15, 1967, of pancreatic cancer.

Excerpt from BENTLEY SQUARE
Chapter Three
Destiny at the Diner
At lunchtime, Becca decided she needed some air and just wanted to get out of the office. The sun was shining. The sky was a beautiful shade of blue. The air was crisp and clean after a morning rain. She walked down the street, passed the new Italian restaurant. She was drawn into Sullivan’s diner. She hadn’t been in the diner in years. She and her father used to come here for lunch when she first starting working at Bentley Square. The diner was busy.
“Rebecca,
is that you? How are you? Good to see you.”
“Hello,
Mr. Sullivan. It’s good to see you,
too. I’m fine. You?”
“Good,
good.”
“And
sweet Mrs. Sullivan?”
“She’s
good, honey. She’s making peach pies
today. I don’t see you down this way any
more.”
“The
Boss doesn’t let me out too often, but we DO order take-out.”
“Yes,
I know. The Boss likes my Reuben
sandwich. Tell him I said hi, honey.”
“I
will.”
She
sat in a small booth by the window and ordered a turkeysandwich and a black
coffee. Across the street in one of the
old, falling apart buildings was an agency she never heard of. It looked dark and gloomy, a sad place to
work. Bad vibrations.
“Excuse
me,” she tapped the man behind her in the next
booth on the shoulder, “How
long has that agency been there? I’ve
worked downtown for years now, and I’ve never heard of it. It seems a little depressing. What is it, Fusco’s?” He turned around. It was HIM, her ‘Richard’!
“Ah,
I, well, hello there!” He felt an odd
mix of shock, fate,
and sheer delight. He felt she was close, but certainly not THIS
close! “Fusco’s? It’s an advertising agency. Its small, old, unassuming. It’s been there for twenty-five years. Depressing?
Oh, yes, you could say that. I
work there. I’ve been there… for five
years now. I’m… I’m the office
manager. Ah… I’m Mark, Mark Ramsey. I’m, ah, so pleased to finally get to meet
you… after all the times I’ve… ah, seen you at the station and… wanted
to…” He extended his hand. Oh, God, he was acting like a complete idiot,
he thought to himself. Just shut the
hell up, he advised himself.
Becca
was elated. He was so warm. He was very familiar to
her, she knew him. So, her Richard’s name was Mark. He didn’t strike her as a Mark. But Mark was a nice name, a good name. Mark.
She shook his hand. No, not
shook, more like caressed it.
Tingle. She held on to it. Oh, great hand, nice, well-proportioned, big,
nice strong grip. She didn’t want to let
go. And a very nice lower lip! That wonderful voice, it spoke to her without
words. That was the voice she heard,
calling to her, talking to her, saying things like “I’m here,” and “Find me,”
and “Hello, Sweetheart.” She thought the
sound of it was absolutely mesmerizing.
She wanted to hear more of it.
“Hello,
Mark,” she smiled at him. “I’m Becca.
Would you care
to join me?” He couldn’t believe his good luck! He brought his coffee over and sat across
from her. He thought she was even more
beautiful up close. And she had such a
lovely voice, not high-pitched or gooey, but pleasant, calm, silken, and so
soothing.
“I
looked for you at the station this morning, Mark, but I
didn’t see you.”
Wow! She looked for him, and she admitted it, he
thought.
He looked at her left
hand. No wedding ring. No engagement ring. For a day that started so badly for him, it
just kept getting better and better.
Early this morning Mr. Fusco threatened to fire him for his lackluster
performance and poor leadership qualities.
He called him pitiful and worthless.
And everybody heard.
“I
had an early meeting with my boss to discuss my semi-
annual job performance
evaluation today. I would have much
rather been at the station looking at you looking for me. You work near here, too?”
“Yes,
at Bentley Square,” she giggled.
“That
damn mighty bastard of Bentley Square, Carlton
Robbins, just bought my apartment
building and is going to tear it down.
In less than three weeks. I just
can’t believe he’s giving us less than three weeks notice before he throws us
all out on the street to fight for the few remaining city apartments, slum
spots actually.”
“You
live at the Comstock?”
“Yes”
“Oh,
Mark! I’m so sorry.”
“No,
no, I’m the one who’s sorry,” he said softly,
apologetically. “Here I am ranting on and on about the
Comstock, when I’m sitting here with such a beautiful woman. One I’ve been hoping to meet… no, no, longing
to meet for a very long time now! What
on earth is the matter with me?” he said, looking down, shaking his head.
“Not
a thing,” she smiled, flirting with him.
He looked up and
blushed. Stay still, don’t reach for her, don’t scare her
off, he said to himself, and whatever the hell you do, don’t you leap across
this table and kiss her! Breathe. Go slow.

Author Interview with Llerxt the 13th
LLerxt the 13th
Where do you live?
I moved from a small town in Virginia to a slightly bigger town in Michigan
What have you written?
I co-authored September Tango with Scarlett Jade and am working on a book series called Elemental Journey.
What is your favorite genre to write?
My imagination usually leads me towards the sci-fi genre, but as everyone can see, with September Tango, I can write just about anything.
Favorite food.
Pizza. I think over the years I'm staring to get tired of it, but nothing seems to want to take it's place.
Where would you like to visit?
Anywhere but Asia, been there, didn't like it.
Favorite musical artist. Do you listen to music when you write?
What? I don't really have a favorite artist anymore, but I usually like to listen to 80's music and some songs without lyrics when I write so I'm not distracted.
What makes you laugh?
Scary movies... seriously, though, I love a good joke, practical or otherwise, and reruns and new episodes of Whose Line is it Anyway?
How old were you when you started writing?
Eleven. I started writing in 6th grade, of course, my work has improved since then, I hope.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Anywhere, music, movies, books. I try not to duplicate anybody else's ideas, but it's really hard to do.
What do you do when you get a writer's block?
I'll go watch a movie or listen to a good song or spend a few minutes meditating to try to get that mental focus back.
Who is your favorite author?
Same with artists, I don't really have a favorite author, but if I had to choose, I'd pick J.K.Rowling. I'm a Harry Potter nerd.
Best book you ever read.
Yeah, I don't really know. If I had to narrow it down to one, I'd say Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Who is the one person who has influenced your personal life the most and why?
My wife, Scarlett. I don't think I would've ever published a book if I didn't meet or marry her. Her constant support has helped me through a whole lot when I had no one, and to be honest, I wouldn't be the person I am today without her. I certainly wouldn't be having this interview right now.
If you could sit down and have a conversation with ONE person, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be and why?
I wouldn't mind talking to Einstein. I would like to know the person behind the genius everybody advertized him as even though he didn't even consider himself a genius.
What advice would you give someone who aspired to be a writer?
Don't ever sell out our let somebody force you to write outside of your comfort zone. Stick to what you're good at and whatever inspires you and don't ever give up on that.

Excerpt from BLUE LAKE
Later
that evening, Nicole accompanied Richard to the airport for his trip back to
London. He was quiet.
“Yes,
I can forgive you. But you didn’t need a
drink for courage. You are a brave
man. I’m glad you came to find me. I’m very glad you found me,” she said softly.
She
was still impressed with his ability to jump in and help. He was so much MORE than a handsome face with
a great voice, and an outstanding lover.
As if that wasn’t enough. And she
really, really missed him when he left.
“Then
could you possibly think about giving us another chance?” He might as well give
it a try. He couldn’t help himself. He may never get another opportunity. He was suddenly optimistic. He moved a little closer.
“Oh,
maybe.”
“You
know, you’ve totally ruined me. If I
can’t have you, then I want no one, because no other woman can compare to
you. You are remarkable. The more I know you, the more remarkable you
are. Every day I find out something new
about you that simply amazes me.”
“Okay. Yes.”
He
was ecstatic, kissing her hands, her nose, her forehead, all while his mind
raced to formulate a plan. He held her
tightly in his arms.
“Can you meet me in Ireland on April 22nd?”
“April
22nd? That’s my
birthday!” Nicole laughed. “Oh, Richard, you don’t give up, do you?”
“No,
I won’t give up on us. Ever. And I’m glad you finally realized it! Maybe now you’ll make it a little easier on
me. Have you ever been to Ireland?”
“No”
“Do
you already have pressing, important birthday plans with family? Friends?”
“No”
“Well,
then it would be my pleasure to celebrate your birthday with you in
Ireland. I will be done filming the
first part in London by then. I plan to
go home for ten days or so to visit my family.
Come to southern Ireland. Meet my
family. You will like them. They’re lovely. They are nothing like me. I’ll email you a ticket and all the
details. Fly from Dublin into Duncan
and I will be waiting for you at the little local airport there.”
“Have
a safe trip, Honey,” she said. He kissed
her and held her close.
“I’ll
call you as soon as I land. I love you,”
he said.
“I
love you,” she answered.

MURANO GLASS
In the 8th century, glass makers on an island off the coast of Venice, Italy, began creating a uniquely exquisite glass. Such was the birth of Murano Glass, named after it's island origins. Glass makers make it elsewhere using "murano" techniques, but connoisseurs of this treasure insist that authentic Murano glass is only made on the island.
Venice was a major port of trading at the time and it brought Asian and Muslim influence into Murano. By the 14th century glass makers there enjoyed a prominence among the citizenry; allowed to wear swords, given immunity to prosecution by the Venetian state, and finding their female off-spring married into the affluent families of the day. However, the price for this prominence was the requirement that they never leave the Republic.
Entering the 17th century, nearly half of Murano's population participated in some way in the glass making industry. They enjoyed a monopoly on quality glass making for centuries and developed and refined glass making techniques like crystalline glass, enamelled glass, multi-colored glass, milk glass, and glass containing gold threads. These techniques are still used today in making art glass, glass figurines, and Murano glass chandeliers. There are still many glass factories in Murano today creating all kinds of glass from stemware to sculptures.
The making of Murano Glass is a complex process, most of it employing the "lampworking" technique. Lampworking is a method of melting and shaping solid glass in the flame of a tabletop torch. Glass is made of silica, which when heated to very high temperatures becomes liquid. The interval where the glass is soft prior to solidifying is where the glass artist shapes the material.
There are raw materials used in the process, called "flux" or "melting agents". These soften at lower temperatures. The higher the sodium oxide content in the glass, the more time it takes to solidify. This allows more time for glass makers to shape the material. Artisans add other raw materials to the glass such as sodium which makes for an opaque surface and nitrate and arsenic, which eliminates bubbles.
Coloring materials vary according to the look that the artist is trying to achieve. For example, aquamarine is achieved by combining copper and cobalt compounds, while ruby red is achieved using a gold solution as coloring agent.
There are many well-known historic glass factories still producing today. Among them, Gabbiani, Venini, Berengo Studio, Simone Cenedese, and the oldest being Antica Vetreria Fratelli Toso, which was established in 1854. Only a few use the Artistic Glass Murano trademark which certifies those glass products are made on the island of Murano.

An Interview with Actor Mario Temes
Mario Temes
Hialeah, FL
Okay, Mario, what made you want to become an actor?
I always had a love for the arts, I grew up playing different instruments as well as watching my father on Spanish TV as an actor and my sister in various dance teams and in musical theater plays. In my last years of middle school my sister recommended I’d join the schools musical teather department and see if it was something I’d enjoy doing, to my surprise it definitely was! After growing such a deep passion for the arts I decided to get more into the film/TV side of the business.
What is the hardest part of being an actor?
Definitely getting your mind out of a role, it’s pretty intense and scary at how a role can consume your mind for such a long period of time.
What is your favorite food? Don’t exactly have a favorite food, but I do have a favorite “type” of food! I’d definitely say any Chinese or Italian food would be on my favorites list.
Where would you like to visit? As many places as possible! Why leave the world without knowing what’s beyond what you’ve only seen.
What are your performance skills?
Besides acting, I also play drums, guitar, bass, sing and rap!
What makes you laugh?
Naturally funny people! Don’t really find it funny when someone “tries” to be funny, if the comedic side to you is a natural thing you’ll definitely have me laughing the whole time I’m with you.
How old were you when you started acting?
I believe I was about 13 years old when I began taking acting seriously. I did act at around the age of 7 for a Spanish TV show that never aired but I wasn’t very serious about it at the time.
You’ve done theater work, too. So you sing and dance?
Yes I do!
Are you a tenor?
Correct!
Oooh, I LIKE tenors! Favorite dance?
Salsa, growing up in a Cuban household kind of automatically means you will learn how to dance salsa, haha!
Favorite sport?
Basketball
Favorite musical artist?
Too many too name but I’m a huge fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I hear you’re a musician as well. Do you play an instrument?
Drums, various percussion instruments, guitar and bass!
As an actor, you have to be able to do a good, believable foreign accent. Do you have one?
Yes, I can do vairous accents. It’s not too hard if you study the accents and people with the accent, everything takes patience.
What is your favorite work of art or sculpture?
I’m a huge fan of abstract art or very dark art, don’t exactly have a favorite anything that basically catches my minds attention and makes me really think about it is an A+ on my list.
Who is your favorite author?
Huge fan of the Lord Of The Rings series, that says enough hah!
Have you been in any films yet?
My latest film was “Sub Rosa” which I played the lead role of “Alan”, I also just directed my own film “I Am Sane” and I’m currently on a TV show “Clarissa’s World” as “Charlie”.
Who is the one person who has influenced your personal life the most and why?
Can’t choose one, basically everyone grows up how they’re raised in there household until a certain point in life where you choose the start making your own decisions.
If you could sit down and have a conversation with ONE person, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be and why?
I’d really like to sit down with Tom Hardy because it seems as if he’s gone through the same steps I have in my earlier life.
What advice would you give someone who aspired to be an actor, besides “marry well”?
Never quit on your dreams, anything is possible you just can’t give up no matter how old you are and ALWAYS do it for the love of the craft never for the fame and money! If you do it for the fame and money or let that start consuming your mind as you get more recognition then it will definitely show in the work you do.

Author Interview with Blakely Bennett
Hello Carol! Thank you so much for participating in the My Body Trilogy Virtual Book Tour.
I’m Blakely Bennett and I currently reside in Seattle,
Washington. I grew up in Southeast Florida and don’t miss the hot summers at
all. I do, however, miss the warm beach waters.
What have you
written?
The third book of my trilogy, My Body-Mine was just recently
released which completed the trilogy. Here are the three books with short
blurbs:
My Body-His:
The trilogy begins one night at a party, when Jane meets an
intense and compelling stranger named Luke. The fateful encounter prompts her
predictable life path to veer into uncharted waters, sweeping her on a
frightening erotic journey into bondage, domination and submission. How far
down this dark, descending path is she willing to go?
My Body-His (Marcello):
Jane Stiles has embarked on an intense odyssey into the world
of domination and submission. Her lover, Luke, encouraged her to quit her job
and give up her possessions, so her life now revolves around him, his friends
and clients. Hovering in the background is Luke’s best friend, Marcello, whose
ego is as towering as his stature. Marcello has set his sights on Jane.
My Body-Mine:
Jane’s marriage to Luke, who drew her in to the dark side of
BDSM, is over. She has taken refuge with Marcello, who insists that she submit
to his demands or move on. When she meets Chase, a confident and flirtatious
man outside of the lifestyle, she resists their intense chemistry. Can she find
the kink she has come to desire without the full-time submission?
What is your
favorite genre to write?
So far it has been erotic suspense but I’m pretty sure my
next series will fall more in the erotic romance category but we will have to
wait and see. ;)
Favorite food?
My favorite types of food are Thai and Japanese. My favorite
food of all … chocolate!
Where would you
like to visit?
All over Europe and any place with a beach.
Favorite
musical artist?
This is a hard one for me. I love, love, love music, and am
listening to some right now as I type. It really depends on my mood. My daughter
tells me I like “emo” music but truly I have very eclectic tastes. My favorite
genre is hard alternative.
How old were
you when you started writing?
I wish my memory was that good. I would journal a lot as a
kid and young adult. I would start stories often but never finished a full-length
novel until I was thirty.
Where do you
get your inspiration?
That’s a mystery I have yet to solve. Writing for me is an
altered state and I just follow the flow.
What do you do
when you get a writer's block?
Writer’s block hasn’t been much of an issue for me. I sit and
eventually the words come.
Who is your
favorite author?
That’s another “at the moment” thing. It has changed over the
years. Right now I’m really loving two unpublished authors who have let me help
with editing. Watch out for Heidi Stewart, author of Twisted (about a serial killer and a novelist) and Pepper Winters,
author of Tears of Tess (about a
woman getting abducted in Mexico – think intense AND sexy).
Best book you
ever read?
I have four all-time favorites, all of which I have read more
than once:
1.
Siddhartha
by Herman Hesse – Each time I read it, I learn something new.
2.
Replay
by Ken Grimwood – I love the character arc in this story.
3.
Time
Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger – I wish I had written this one. It’s a
masterpiece.
4.
Killing
Me Softly by Nicci French – This book inspired me to bring suspense and erotica
together.
Who is the one
person who has influence your personal life the most and why?
This is an easy one to answer … my husband. We have been
together over eighteen years and fall deeper in love all the time. He is the
biggest fan of my writing and the person I am. There is nothing better in life
than having your own personal cheerleader. He lifts me up, challenges me, and
makes me feel special every day.
If you could sit down and have a conversation
with ONE person, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be and why?
From a professional standpoint, Oprah or Ellen for the
exposure it would bring to my novels. From a curiosity standpoint, Bill Clinton
(I wouldn’t mind if Hillary tagged along either). Bill would be an interesting
person to create a character based on. He reached the pinnacle in politics and
became his own undoing.
What advice would you give someone who aspires
to be a writer?
Good writing doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Make sure to use
test readers and a professional editor. If Stephen King still uses them after
all the books he has published, we mere peons should as well.

Jane and Luke

there, her life spins out of control. But Jane has a strong spirit, and she

About the Author:
Blakely Bennett
grew up in Southeast Florida and has been residing in the great Northwest for
over eight years. She graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a degree
in psychology, which accounts for her particular interest in crafting the
personalities, struggles, and motivations of her characters. She is an avid
reader of many genres of fiction, but especially erotica and romance. Writing
has always been her bliss. She is attracted to stories of self-struggle and
ultimate recovery.
Blakely is married
to a wonderful, loving and supportive husband, also a writer, who helps to keep
her grounded. She is a mother, a communitarian, a lover of music (always on
while she is writing—thank you, Pandora), and a good friend. An advocate of
love and female empowerment, she is a facilitator for a women’s group. She
loves to walk and hike for exercise and finds that, since moving to Seattle,
WA, she is now one of those “crazy” people who walk in the rain.
