TV TIME: Maria (Netflix)

I was totally taken with the Netflix film, Maria. I am old enough to remember the beautiful, talented opera singer Maria Callas, as well as Aristotle Onassis, and the Kennedys.

There were times in this film where the actor and the subject of the film merged into one beautiful, talented, tortured, fiercely independent, and complicated human being.

The locations, Maria’s gorgeous Paris apartment, the music: each of these alone was a reason to watch this touching film that showcases Paris at its best and layers Maria’s many opera roles in their magnificence with the opera superstar’s delicate condition in her final days.

BOOK OF THE MONTH: Red Sarah, (Post #5 - Strong Female Characters)

The inspiration for this story in retrospect may have come from a story I read to my first grade students in 1980. It was a delightful role-flipping fairy tale called The Paperbag Princess by Robert Munich.

Of course, in Red Sarah, Sarah is not a Princess, but a scientist who works for a foundation that rescues prominent, life-altering individuals whose lives are in imminent danger before their life-altering contributions have been made.

And Prince Lucas is not rude Royal brat who insults the Princess’ behavior and attire.

If you’ve never read The Paperback Princess, I suggest you round up a child or two and read the story together.

You cannot look at these vintage aquariums and not think of them as objects of art, rather than fish houses!
