BOOK: Belterra, Time After Time, by Carol Ann Kauffman

Coming of Age Fantasy, Sci-fi Romantic Adventure The Time After Time Series follows a pair of unlikely lovers on their adventures through their many lifetimes together. This time the couple is reborn on an alien planet, Belterra. The law forbids not only intermarriage, but interaction between the four clans is discouraged. Will fate guide them to each other? Braedon, Lord of the Soldier Clan of the East, often dreamed of a beautiful blonde woman. When he rode into the lavender fields of the West searching for her, he had no idea if she was even real. But there she was, Neeka, daughter of the Lord of the Warrior Clan, waiting for him. He reached out to her and she accepted his hand, as memories of their previous lives flooded their minds and love warmed their hearts. Fate can’t keep them apart. What they have is more than love. They’re eternal soulmates. Their everlasting love survived many lifetimes but never without sacrifice and heartache. This lifetime will not be any different. Can one person make a difference? Against all odds, the hatred among the clans, her father’s disapproval, and the power-hungry, evil scientists, Neeka fights for their love and the right to be together, changing not only their lives but the course of life, love, freedom, and the political structure of their planet forever.

Excerpt:

“My People, it is my pleasure to have you all gathered together to welcome my lovely Neeka to our clan. I feel very fortunate she agreed to come live with us. It is also the first time in ten years we have had a medicine woman. I am sure we will all keep her busy.

“On a more serious note, please remember to keep ever vigilant. Northford and Southland are always ready to devour each other. We must remember that Belterra must be kept in balance. We are like legs of a table; all four must remain strong, not allowing one to take over. Keep strong. Be vigilant. Keep on the lookout for trouble. Stay ready. Thank you.”

Then they ate. It was heavier cuisine than she was used to, and very salty. Her people ate mostly plants. After dinner as he refilled his wine cup, she panicked. She smelled something She looked at him and noticed a faint blueness around his lower lip. As he raised the glass to his lips, she reached for his hand and held it away from his lips. She stroked his hair and his earlobe with her other hand and got very close to him.

“Lord Braedon, listen to me carefully,” she smiled and whispered to him very quietly. “Do not show reaction in your face. Do not drink. Pretend to drink. Get a little on your lower lip. Then kiss me so that I may taste it to be sure. I think it is poison,” she whispered in his ear. She brushed her lips up against his ear.

“Your people already? They are fast!” He kissed her. She hung onto his lower lip. He kissed her again, holding her tightly in his arm. “Am I going to die?” he whispered.

“Yes, My Love, but not today.” She kissed him again, this time just to kiss him.

“All of my men are very envious of me right now!” he observed. “They cannot take their eyes off of you.”

“Can you get us out of here? I need to tend you now.”

He nodded. They stood up together, still locked in embrace. “My people, please stay and continue to celebrate our good fortune. My Neeka and I have some, uh, urgent business to take care of!”

The crowd roared with laughter as Neeka and Braedon waved and left the table and went back to their small house. At home, she busied herself making an antidote. She tended him and made him drink water.

“You will be okay. It is an accumulative poison. I can reverse it. Have you had headaches?”

“Why, yes, for the last two weeks constantly. But I tend to get headaches, it comes with the job.”

 “And abdominal distress?”

“Recently, yes. My own people?”

“I don’t know. I only know this has been going on a while. Before I came. Don’t worry. You’ll be fine. Can I work on your headache? Do you trust me?”

“Completely”

“Then close your eyes and relax. First we’ll do away with this nasty headache. And after that we’ll work on your abdomen. Lastly we will need to figure out who wants to harm you.” She sat down in front of him, putting her left hand on the base of his scull, pushing in on the hollow spot with her middle finger, while using her right hand fingers to squeeze the spot between his eyes, gently lifting his head. “Breathe, my dear. You may experience a little discomfort for a moment or two. Bear with me. Are you okay?”

“Yes” he smiled. ”Do not worry. I am tough.”

“Just a moment longer. Breathe, Love.”

“Ah!” Relief. His coloring returned. She handed him a cup of water and he drank. “Oh, wow!”

 “Do you feel better?”

 “Yes.”

“Now I want you to lie down.”

He smiled at her and pulled her down onto him, wrapping her in his arms. “YOU are wonderful! I am impressed.” He said with admiration. She laughed. “No, I mean it. I tend to get headaches. I think all War Lords are plagued with headaches. But you are an absolute treasure to me, for many reasons.”

“Thank you, My Lord. It will be my pleasure to eradicate every headache that comes your way for the rest of my life.” She then explained to him about the blue tinge to his lips and the faint almond nut, mild cherry odor to his drink. She made an herb paste to apply it to his bare abdomen, and set it aside to gel. “This discomfort in your abdomen will take a little longer to go away. But now we need to think of ONE person you trust completely, one who is completely loyal to you, no one that handles your food or drink. And from now on, all your food and drink goes passed me first. The overly salty food ensured you would drink more tainted wine. Now, who?”

 “My mother.”

“You have a mother?” she asked in surprise.

“Oh, why do you warriors always feel we soulless soldiers are hatched from giant eggs, not born?”

She laughed. “That is not true. We do not think you are soulless. We think you are scary.”

He growled and grabbed her, laughing. “So you think I am scary, huh?”

“Yes. No, not you. Soldiers in general we think are scary. You love to fight.”

 “Warriors fight!”

“Yes, but only when necessary. Back to your mother, I am just surprised. Our women do not last very long. They die young. I guess we warriors just wear them out. My mother died many years ago, when I was just a little girl. My stepmother died also, after giving birth to four sons in four years. Why doesn’t your mother live here with you?”

“Because big bad War Lords don’t live with their mamas.” They laughed.

TV TIME: Joe Pickett (Paramount+)

Follows a game warden and his family during a changing political and socioeconomic
climate in a small rural town.

This series on Paramount+ was recommended to me by a fellow Longmire fan.
And although it is no Longmire, it was a good series.

Like Longmire, the secret sauce to this series is the ensemble cast that works together,
breathes together, and oozes talent and heart.

There were three seasons of Joe Pickett.

BOOK REVIEW: Ice and Secrets by Cherime MacFarlane

Ice and Secrets by Cherime MacFarlane is an Alaskan
romantic adventure story with a mystery about gold that was
hard to put down. It is a well written, suspenseful mystery
surrounding a gold mine, bodies in a mineshaft, and a young
woman thrown out of a moving helicopter. You can’t help
but root for the lovable main characters, Lane and Micha.
Cherime MacFarlane’s books are like an expedition to
Alaska. The authentic flavor makes you feel you were there
experiencing the cold, the exhilaration, and the beautiful
landscape with Lane and Micha. I highly recommend.
