BOOKS: Belterra and Dark Return by Carol Ann Kauffman

 Belterra

A Coming of Age Fantasy,
Sci-fi Romantic Adventure

The Time After Time Series follows a pair of unlikely lovers on their adventures through their many lifetimes together. This time the couple is reborn on an alien planet, Belterra. The law forbids not only intermarriage, but interaction between the four clans is discouraged.

Will fate guide them to each other?
Braedon, Lord of the Soldier Clan of the East, often dreamed of a beautiful blonde woman. When he rode into the lavender fields of the West searching for her, he had no idea if she was even real. But there she was, Neeka, daughter of the Lord of the Warrior Clan, waiting for him.

He reached out to her and she accepted his hand, as memories of their previous lives flooded their minds and love warmed their hearts.

Fate can’t keep them apart. What they have is more than love. They’re eternal soulmates. Their everlasting love survived many lifetimes but never without sacrifice and heartache. This lifetime will not be any different.

Can one person make a difference?

Against all odds, the hatred among the clans, her father’s disapproval, and the power-hungry, evil scientists, Neeka fights for their love and the right to be together, changing not only their lives but the course of life, love, freedom, and the political structure of their planet forever.

Dark Return

Dark Return is the sequel to Belterra, Time After Time, and takes place about ten years afterwards.

When Belterra was populated long ago by a select group of humans sent here by the ancients in the hope of saving the human race, the indigenous species of bat-like creatures called the Batrach were forced into the ocean and underground sea caves by a giant force field.

The force field has now weakened.
The Batrach have emerged from their watery prison and they want their planet back.

The Final Belterra Episode

There is a third and final Belterra book in the works. Do you remember when Braedon told Neeka the Lord of War never gets to retire to the countryside and play with his grandchildren? This third book will compass that latter part of the Braedon-Neeka saga.

ENTERTAINMENT: Good Karma Hospital

Dr. Ruby Walker takes a job in rinky dink hospital in South India to start over again because her life isn't going the way she planned. A bad break-up sends her packing to India.

This was a well-written medical series set in India. The Good Karma Hospital is a little cottage hospital, run by the very interesting ex-pat Dr. Lydia Fonseca, played to perfection by the talented Amanda Redman. The hospital is underfunded, understaffed, and overrun with sick people. Beautiful location and great acting make this medical drama series worth watching.

INTERVIEW: Science Fantasy Adventure Writer J.S. Burke

Science Fantasy Adventure Writer
J.S Burke
Georgia, US

Good morning, J.S., and welcome to Vision and Verse, the Place for Art and Authors. What have you written?
My published books are “Crystal Geometry”, “Crystal Colors”, “The Dragon Dreamer”, “Dragon Lightning”, and “Fantasy Snowflakes Coloring Book”.

I have your Fantasy Snowflakes Coloring Book. You are an amazing artist as well as an author. What is your favorite genre to write?
Science Fantasy Adventure.

Favorite food.
Chocolate!

Tea or coffee?
Peppermint tea, please.

I love peppermint tea! Also ginger. Pizza or ice cream?
Chocolate ice cream. And, you’re making me hungry!

Wine or beer?
Pina colada. If not that, then wine.

Where would you like to visit?
I’d love to dive on the Great Barrier Reef.

Favorite musical artist.  Do you listen to music when you write?
Pachelbel’s Canon as played on the harp holds many memories for me.
I write best in silence.

Me. too. There's enough going on in my head without music. What makes you laugh?
I love the zany humor of Far Side comics.

Favorite work of art or sculpture.
I love the illustrations in “The Velveteen Rabbit”! I also love the marble sculptures in the High Museum of Art.

How old were you when you started writing?
I began writing simple poems as soon as I could read. My novels have poetic descriptions.

Do you plan out your book with outlines and notecards? Or just write?
I write until I know enough to make an outline and plan. Sometimes a new character enters my mind and I need to learn what he or she is up to. There’s a new ice dragon baby who’s growing into an interesting character, caught between worlds.

Describe your perfect evening.
Relaxing beneath the stars on a sandy beach, listening to the waves, drinking a pina colada. If the waves are glowing with bioluminescent critters, that’s even better!

Where do you get your inspiration?
Everything I read or see can inspire ideas. My ceramic bowl with a rock inspired the start of the Dragon Dreamer series. Snowflakes inspired the Winter Festival.

What do you do when you get a writer's block?
Work on something else. I might design, draw, or clean my fantasy snowflakes, read another author’s book, make jewelry for the upcoming artist shows, or get something else done that needs doing.

Who is your favorite author?
I love too many to choose just one.

Best book you ever read.
Books are like fruit: apple, orange, cherry, tangerine, watermelon, grapes . . . all different, all delicious. I love “Witch of Blackbird Pond”, any decent SciFi, and good history books. “Dune” and “Left Hand of Darkness” are excellent!!!

Last book you read.
“Pip and Flinx” by Alan Dean Foster. He does great world-building!

What would you do for a living if you weren’t a writer?
I’m a scientist, tutor, and artist. Some day I may make a living as an author.

Who is the one person who has influenced your personal life the most and why?
Family and friends are very important, but thousands of people have influenced me, even characters in books. I’m grateful to everyone who’s been supportive of me and everyone I’ve had the privilege of helping.

If you could sit down and have a conversation with ONE person, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be?
My parents.

What advice would you give someone who aspired to be a writer?
Just start writing.
Get feedback but believe in your own instincts. Polish your work ‘til it shines. Thank you so much for having me on your beautiful site!

Thank you! It's always a pleasure to introduce quality writers and artists to my wonderful Vision and Verse audience.

BOOK REVIEW: The Case at Barton Manor by Emily Queen

1920’s London

Rosemary Lillywhite had no intention of becoming a lady detective, but when a desperate woman knocks on the door of her dead husband’s investigative office, she’s forced to make a choice: either take the case or turn Grace Barton away. Working cases with Andrew had been fulfilling, but a woman in 1920’s London couldn’t run such a business by herself—or could she?

When Rosemary discovers that Grace is from the same village where her family lives, and that they’re all invited to a party at Barton Manor, she knows it’s a proposition she can’t refuse. With her best friend, bright young thing Vera Blackburn at her side, Rosemary heads to the country and finds herself embroiled in a murder investigation.

The plot thickens when she’s forced to defend her brother Frederick’s good name, and is confronted with romantic feelings towards handsome CID detective and old friend Max Whittington. Will Rosemary solve the crime before the murderer strikes again?

Book one in The Mrs. Lillywhite Investigates series.
Are you ready to escape to the roaring twenties? For fans of Beth Byers, Leighann Dobbs, and Lee Strauss.

A light, cozy mystery with no swearing, graphic scenes, or cliffhangers.

I enjoyed The Case at Barton Manor, a 1920s Mrs.

Lilywhite Mystery, Book 1 by Emily Queen. In this

book, the author sets us up for a wonderful cozy

mystery adventure series with great characters,

lovely British manors, and hints of romance to come.

I liked Mrs. Rosemary Lilywhite. I liked her dead

husband Andrew. I will be reading more of her

adventures.
