Pink Underpants

Early the next morning, Ethan was deep in thought.
“Melina, you’re going to have to slow down soon, you know.  You’re working full time and you do everything at home.  And the cooking.  And the baking.  You spoil me rotten.”
“Yes, that’s my goal.  A rotten husband.”
“Be serious!  Let some of this ride for a while.  I only want you to feel good and be healthy.  I don’t care about anything else.  I don’t care if I have to eat Chinese take-away three nights a week.”
“I care!  And the baby and I have to eat healthy.”
“Very well then, how about the laundry.  I can do up the laundry.  I know how to load the machine and push the buttons.”
“Yes, but how about sorting?  The last time you did the laundry, you washed our red beach towels with your white underwear.  Remember?”
“Yes,” he laughed, “and I had to wear pink underpants, which really isn’t such a big issue when one keeps one’s clothes on.  Melina, I insist.  And I promise I’ll sort.  Whites from reds.  Okay?  No more carrying laundry baskets downstairs.  Or carrying them back up.  From this moment on, I am in charge of all the laundry in this house.  Agreed?”
“Agreed”
“I’m… worried.”
“Ethan!  I’ve never known you to worry about anything in your life.”
“Well, I am now.  I’m worried about you, he said.”  She moved over and cuddled up in next to him.
“You dear sweet man, don’t worry.”  He held her close and kissed her head and her neck.
“I’m afraid, Melina.  I’m scared to death I’m going to lose you.”

“You aren’t going to lose me.”

5.0 out of 5 stars A touching story and yummy recipes! :) September 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful little novella. Carol Ann Kauffman, author of Time After Time series, has written a completely unrelated touching novella. It's letters from a dying mother to her unborn baby. She is leaving her letters on how to live her life, advice on growing up, falling in love. This book is incredibly touching. It's also filled with amazing recipes, that the mother is passing down to her child. Recipes that the family always made.

This little cookbook/ novella is wonderful, touching and a great addition to a kitchen! :)

Format:Kindle Edition
Wow! This is both heart-breaking and hugely absorbing, the storytelling is fast paced and exceptionally well written, I loved the conversational style of Melina and the direct and honest outpouring of emotions. The recipes are both informative and wonderful, and certainly a surprise and innovative element of the narrative. This is the second book I have read by Carol and this continued to delight and engage, hugely recommended.

*****5.0 out of 5 starsEcho's of This Mothers Heart. January 20, 2015

This book broke my heart and healed it all in one sitting. I suggest that all mothers share this book with their daughters and visa versa. It is a story of a young mothers struggle to leave a legacy of knowledge and some tasty ideas. I truly loved this book and will share with my daughters and grandaughters. I hope that eveyone will take the advice of this loving mother. Carol Ann Kauffman truly captures the human spirit in this loving tribute to women everywhere.

Excerpt:

She wasn’t concerned about going back up to the house alone. She walked home late and alone hundreds of times. Besides, the guys completed all the upgrades in their security and now the campus was even more secure than when first built. She would grab one of the carts and be home in less than five minutes. As she finished shutting things down and readied her desk for the next day, she realized she was the only person left in the building.

“Don’t be silly,” she chided herself. “Security has been beefed up and there is absolutely not one thing to worry about.”

Still an uneasy feeling grabbed hold and wouldn’t let go. She looked out her window to make sure a cart was available. The night was clear, stars filled the sky, and the moon was a meager sliver. Everything took on a sinister appearance. There were no carts sitting under the streetlight, where they were supposed to be. She decided to contact the front gate and make sure there would be cart and a security guard out front when she wanted to leave.

She pressed the intercom button to the gate and let it ring for a bit. She waited, and pressed the button again.

“Strange.”

She pulled the file out of her desk drawer to see who was on duty. Frank, the shift boss, was on. He was one of the first people they hired when they started to staff the campus and one of their most conscientious employees. Payton sat back in her chair.

I’m being silly. I’m sure it’s been a busy night, and Frank has probably stepped away to get a cup of coffee.

She grabbed her purse out of her desk drawer, double-checked to verify her cell phone was in her jacket pocket, and left for the main gate to get a cart. The gate sat directly across the parking lot and the entire area was well lit with streetlights. An ominous dread slithered down the back of Payton’s neck. Was there someone else in the vicinity? She scanned the entire area. No one.

“These blasted psychic abilities,” she mumbled.

She thought she had more control over them. She needed to heed Victory’s advice and work on honing her skill on a daily basis.

As she approached the gate, she noticed there appeared to be no one in the security shack. Not unusual, this often happened at night. When it was quiet and the gate locked, instead of sitting in the tiny shack, the guards would stay in the security office across the street from the shack. There were lights on in the office, a safe bet Frank was there. She pictured a cup of coffee in his hand as he watched his favorite talk show.

Payton veered toward the office building, she gave one last backward glance at the shack. She stopped in midstride. Something seemed off, and she noticed the door ajar. The door was equipped with an automatic close-and-lock feature. The only way for the door to be left open was if someone stood in the doorway or something prohibited the door from closing.

She walked up to the shack and reached out to take the doorknob. Her eyes tracked down the length of the door, until she saw what kept the door from closing. There was a black shoe wedged in the doorway. She stared at the shoe, her mind not able to register what she saw. Her eyes traveled from the shoe, to the dark blue pant leg, to the matching shirt…Payton gasped.

There lay Frank, crumpled across the floor, a dark wet spot on the left side of his chest. She reached into her jacket pocket, and fumbled for her phone. She finally pulled the phone out, and pressed the power button, as she felt the strangest prick at the side of her neck. She turned to her left, where she noticed movement. Her head started to spin and her eyes blurred. She caught a blurry image of a man right before she hit the ground.

Heart of Stone by Alison Jean Ash

In the mood for a great Valentine's Day read?  Here.  It.  Is.

Heart of Stone
by Alison Jean Ash

Part 3 of the small-town romance Oakville Series.

Sharon Hall’s biological clock is ticking. Policeman Jack Kennett appeals to the cuddly librarian, very much—but his attitude toward the library’s less-fortunate makes her wonder if he’s too cold-hearted for marriage and fatherhood. Meanwhile, a very odd young man seems to be getting dangerously obsessed with Sharon.
Welcome to Oakville, a contemporary small town where people still know their neighbors, friendships last a lifetime, and gossip is a force of nature!

A Review of Heart of Stone from Amazon:
Format:Kindle Edition
I am an avid Oakville fan, and Heart of Stone may be my favorite so far! Ms Ash always draws me in deeply with her characters. I really care about them, and this tale is a heart melter. The way Ash deepens this story as a whole, and also nuances each individual character’s story made for a great read that left me so satisfied - except for the delicious anxious waiting for, 'What's next in Oakville'? LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS STORY!

One of Those Days by Samna Ghani

Ready for a terrific Valentine's Day read?  Here.  It.  Is.

Book Blurb

Elizabeth Jennings has hit a low point in her life. Unstable job, poor financial situation and complex personal issues that make her just want to curl up and sit at home. Then she crashes into Neil Baldwin. Literally. And nothing is the same after that. In a span of one day, Elizabeth finds her very own Valentine miracle. It’s sweet, it’s unexpected and it comes in a neatly wrapped package in the form of Neil Baldwin. Just one of those days we all dream of.

Excerpt from One of Those Days

Elizabeth felt flustered with him so close to her. She thought her heart would pop out completely when Neil pulled her even closer and softly brushed his lips against hers. Then his lips moved on to her cheek and down to her neck. “You feel nothing?” he asked, so softly he was barely audible. Elizabeth’s breathing quickened. “Neil, we just met. I don’t think―” Elizabeth started but before she could continue, his lips were on hers, making it difficult for her to think of anything else but how good it felt and how much she wanted the moment to last forever. It was no ordinary kiss. Neil claimed her mouth as if she belonged to him and his lips evoked a response from her that she couldn't control. Both of them were unaware of their surroundings as they kissed there on the sidewalk. Rain fell on their faces, people walked past them and cars rushed on, but nothing mattered except for this closeness to him. Elizabeth’s spun when Neil finally let her go. “This is moving way too fast for me,” she blurted out as she tried to control her racing pulse.

out of 5 stars A Must Read! December 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Pieces of Mel Poetry Collection One is an amazing book of poetry. As I read through each poem I felt as if I was getting a little piece of the author. These poems are not just words on paper; they are like their own little stories. I really enjoyed reading them and had about 40 favorites. I finally had to stop marking because they were quickly all becoming favorites, but I did finally choose six that really spoke to me. They are She Doesn’t Know He’s Gone, The Little Princess, Surrendering To The Flame, Darkening Nightmares, In Fates Ocean and I Am My Own Enemy.
I am so grateful that I was able to read this book and look forward to reading more work by this author. Mel Turner is an outstanding writing and I am just in love with her poetry. I highly recommend this poetry book to all lovers of poetry. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pieces of Mel by Melina Turner December 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
There is no question in my mind why Melina Turner is an award winning writer. Pieces of Mel is an exquisitely written book of poetry. While reading this work I marveled at the way the author would put together the verses. I found that many of the poems were written in a way that you could interpret more than one meaning, but every and all meanings ran very deep into the imagination. I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to read some of the better abstract poetry. I refer to it as abstract because of the way the author uses the words she chooses. In no way is that a knock on her work at all. Trust me, once you read this book, you will have a deeper insight into the mind of a writer. Enjoy your reading experience.. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! December 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Pieces Of Mel was a very interesting book on a variety of poems written by author Melina Turner throughout the years. Many of the poems reflected events that Melina had lived through, and a vast majority brought tears to my eyes. Some even made me cry. Melina has her way of writing the poems that make the meanings different for each poem even if they were similar in writing. The poems were very heartfelt and I can tell that the author really put her heart into them. They were extremely well written. The book itself was well put together. I like that for they were organized by year in the most part. All in all, I really loved this book, and I can't wait to see what Melina has in store for us next. I give this 5 out of 5 stars, no doubt!
