Chapter One

Red Eye Out

“Brian, I’m leaving on the red eye,” Gee said softly as she leaned up against the edge of his desk. “I’m getting out of here today. I’m going home. It’s the last plane back to the States this week.”

“So, I heard. Connie and Tasha are terribly upset.” He stared out the window. “And so am I. I hate to see you go. You know that. I’ll miss you.”

“Then don’t miss me. Come with me. This operation is falling apart. The unit’s been defunded. Our cover’s blown. The Russians are sniffing around outside our door.”

“You don’t know that for sure, Gee,” said Brian. “Maye they’re new residents or just visiting the area.”

“While taking their machine guns out for a little walk? No. It’s trouble, I can feel it. The locals are scared.  They’ve have pulled all their support. We have no security. We’re sitting ducks.

“Montevia is no longer safe place for any of us. We’re on our own here. You need to get out now, too.”

Gee reached for his hand and squeezed it tightly. “Please, Brian. Don’t be so stubborn. You’ve got to get out of here. Now.”

“That’s very good advice. But I have no other options. Nowhere to go.”

“No family anywhere? Even distant family? Great auntie who loves you? Second cousin? Grandma’s second cousin? ”

“Nope. Haven’t grown any new family since the last time we had this discussion.”

“New girlfriend, maybe?”

“Nope. I’m still hung up on my old one, you know, the one who left me.”

“Brian, don’t. Not now.” She pulled her hand away.

“So, I guess I’ll stick it out here to the bitter end. I’ll take my chances that they’ll keep their word and send somebody to get us home safely.”

“I don’t like those odds. It’s too dangerous.”

“I’ll be fine, Gee. Your worries about my safety are completely unfounded. I’m invisible. Nobody sees me. I blend into the environment, my surroundings, the woodwork. I’m not valuable enough to murder. Tech guys, we’re a dime a dozen.”

“That’s not true. You’re so much more than a tech guy. You’re…” she sighed. “I hope you’ll reconsider. Be extremely careful. If you must stay here a little while longer, please watch out for sweet Boris and Magda. Encourage them to leave the city. Maybe farther out into the country would be safer for them.  I know they don’t want to go back to Belarus, but it’s a powder keg here.”

“I’ll do what I can, but there are no safe places anymore. The world is ready to explode. What we’re doing is simply putting band-aids on booboos. We’re treating the symptoms and ignoring the cause, the root of the disease, the major reason for all this international turmoil.”

“Don’t go getting all political on me, Brian.”

“You still don’t believe me, do you?”

“No. Maybe. I don’t know.”

“I’ve examined all the data. I’ve analyzed the situation. We are in for one major international shit storm.”

“All the more reason to get out of here.” She handed him a slip of paper. “And you do have an option. Me. Here’s my new contact information in the States. It’s out in the middle of nowhere, safe from all major shit storms. If you do manage to get yourself out of here in one piece, come find me. Don’t hesitate to call me.”

“Oh, really? And the new husband, you know, Raymond, the mystery man you left me for? He won’t mind if your old boyfriend shows up at the front door asking for you?”

“Raymond? No, not at all. Come. Seriously. We need to talk.”

“Take care of yourself, Gee. Stay safe. Don’t take any chances.”

“You either, sweetie.” Gee smiled at him as she left the room.

Brian unfolded the note and read.

Gina Belcanto. Prairie Breeze, Oklahoma. Contact Binky at Binky’s Bar on the corner of Main and State St. He’ll get you to the ranch.

Gina Belcanto? I’ve always known her as Geen Bell.

Oklahoma? I never would’ve guessed the New York City girl would settle down in Oklahoma,” he said to no one in particular.

The ranch. “It must be the husband’s place.” Brian folder the paper and put it in his pocket. “Raymond,” he snarled.

Later, Brian saw Gee leave the building with the small standard-issue personal effects box in her hand, heading toward the parking lot.

An elderly couple approached her. It was Boris and Magda. Their apartment bordered the back parking lot. Gee loved this old pair. She often had dinner with them. Sometimes they cooked together. They watched old American movies together and talked about the advantages of living a simple life in the country. She brought them tiny treasures from the store, things they had never seen, or food they never tasted.

He watched out the window as they hugged and waved as she walked to her black rental car, put the box on the back seat floor, and slid gracefully into the driver’s seat. As she pulled away, she glanced back at his window, blew him a kiss, and waved to him.

Brian plastered himself against the window, hand firmly pressed to the glass, ready to cry.

Was she aware he was watching her this whole time?

How embarrassing… and desperately sad. How he would have loved to spend more time with her. His ex-girlfriend was the warmest, smartest, funniest person he ever met, as well as a highly skilled agent. And so beautiful. She was also now married, but not to him.

TV TIME: Butterfly (Prime Video)

I like Daniel Dae Kim. He is an exceptional actor. In this spy action thriller streaming on Prime Video called Butterfly, Daniel plays a spy who plays a dad whose daughter is in trouble so he comes out of hiding to save her.

Except, instead of being delighted to see her father alive when he’s supposed to be dead, she gets confrontational. As a girl with a deceased father, I found her reaction to seeing him all wrong. And this young woman is… smirky.

The action is non-stop. The martial arts fight scenes are beautifully shot. The acting is great and it is a good looking movie.

INTERVIEW: French Artist Raphael Seygnovert

Raphael Seygnovert
French Artist

Dear Gentle Readers,

What a treat I have for you today! The wonderful French painter
Raphael Seygnovert has taken time away from his easel to be
with us this morning and I am thrilled to bits, fingerling all over
the place.

Good morning, Raphael and welcome to Vision and Verse, the
place for Art and Authors. I am a big fan of your work. It is my pleasure to have you here with us. Tell us a little about your work.
When I realize a work, I try more to express a feeling than to
follow strictly speaking a figurative approach with as a theme the landscape.
I use an archaic graphic language impregnated with all my experience, all my musical and pictorial artistic influences. It is
as if I were trying to express a distant memory that would not
have root in our present life. As a vision the eyelids closed.

What is your favorite medium?
I love all the pictorial techniques. It is a real pleasure to apply and work the pastel with
the fingers, I also like acrylic but I use it recently; I have a preference for oil, it is
a very complicated technique.

So what does our favorite Frenchman like to eat?
I appreciate French cuisine but as I am a vegetarian it is a bit
complicated; I also love Asian, Indian and Japanese cuisine.
Vegetables, cheeses ... And I love cooking too.

Coffee or tea?
I drink tea and coffee, but more coffee; In the north of France
we drink a lot of coffee.

Pizza or ice cream?
The both!  Pizza "Sicilian" and Lemon ice cream.

What piques your interest?
I love everything about ancient cultures, ancient civilizations, mysteries ...

Favorite kind of music?
I love acoustic guitar, folk music, mystical music, relaxation music, traditional music and Celtic music. I listen to many different things, I would hardly say my favorite artist.

What makes Raphael Seygnovert laugh?
I laugh easily, I like to laugh with my friends. The imitators make me laugh, the hidden
cameras too.

This is my very favorite of all your works. I have a small print
of this hanging in my bedroom. You call it bluebells, but in my
part of the world, we have tiny pale violet clusters called bluettes, or Quaker Ladies, that only bloom in the wet, wet spring, only in the woods or parks.
They are my favorite flower. You cannot buy them in a store. You can't order them online or by phone. You can't get them from a florist. You must tromp through the wet woods and get all muddy to find these little beauties.

How old were you when you began creating art?
I started to paint very young, then being an adult I stopped for a
long time to resume after. But painting, art, is not a craft strictly
speaking, it is a way of life. It's not a choice one day makes
saying  "it's an interesting job", or "I can make a lot of money like that!" Or "I will be famous." This is necessary to us, for we need
to create, to express ourselves in this way, because it is part of
us. I need, as an auto-therapeutic way, to paint, it is my medicine ...which heals my soul.
I think the important thing is to be in agreement with ourselves.

We all like to draw, paint, glue rocks together, snap photos, etc., but we are well aware we couldn’t make a living doing it.  When did you know you made the right decision?
I am comforted in my choice by all positive feedback from the people I meet.

Where do you get your inspiration?
Nature is a constant source of inspiration, walking in the middle
of the trees has always done me good, it is resource, we should
try to preserve as many natural spaces as possible.
My spirituality is also a source of inspiration.

What do you do when you get an artist block?
The artistic blockages I see more like moments of reflection that
allow to take a new beginning, to have a new eye. We are all the time, internally, dying and reborn to evolve, to grow. Like the
chrysalid and the butterfly.

Favorite artist?
I like many different artists, I like the Impressionists, Monet, Van Gogh, Cross, Corot and
also Modigliani ...

If you were not an artist, what would you do for a living?

If I was not a painter, I would have liked to be a professional guitarist,
a singer, or a social job.

Who has influenced you most in your life?
The person who has influenced me most is hard to say; I have a
thought for my father ... he was a great person ... courageous and much more, my mother too.. but I do not forget the others, all those people
who cross your path and illuminate it even for a short time.
I think we are all like sponges, every interaction, every encounter,
changes our life in its own way.

What advice would you give someone who aspired to be an artist?
I will tell him to paint more and more, it is by forging that one
becomes a blacksmith.I would tell him to expose ever more, meetings
and criticisms are always very useful to evolve. To have his own
opinion about his work and that of others. And getting to know one self,
is the best way to be authentic.

BOOK REVIEW: An Invitation to Murder by Norman Russell

I could not put down An Invitation to Murder by Norman Russell. This one was an absolutely gripping murder mystery, full of murders and ghosts and premeditation. The characters were so real and multi-faceted. I loved the old English manor and its customs and aristocracy.  Young love. Old love. Crazy love. This novel had it all.

ART: American Sculptor Louise Nevelson

Okay, I will admit I never heard of Louise Nevelson before watching CBS Sunday Morning. But her iconic sculptures were unique and interesting. There were large wooden wall pieces that were giant collages of rough-cut small pieces, evoking an organic steampunky feeling.

Louise was a Ukrainian immigrant who settled in Maine with her family in the early 1900s.

According to her granddaughter Maria, Louise continued making art her whole life, doing some of her best work in her 70s and 80s.
