What is your favorite genre to write?
I prefer to write stories that make people laugh, no matter what genre, although if I had to pick it would be fantasy.
Favorite food.
My favorite food is Poke Bowls, heavy on the sushi.
Tea or coffee?
Coffee. I am pretty sure that is all that runs in my veins anymore.
Pizza or ice cream?
Both. Definitely both. If I could combine them into one thing, I am pretty sure it would be heaven. It might even rival Mac and Cheese Pizza.
Wine or beer or soda or what?
Coffee. Wine is good. Beer is okay. Soda is acceptable. Coffee is a necessity.
Where would you like to visit?
I’d like to go to Ireland and Japan. I speak both languages, and I am very interested in the cultures. I think that visiting them would be a great learning experience.
Favorite musical artist.
Thrice might be my favorite band, although Hawthorne Heights is right up there. I really like the heavy emotional aspect of both bands. I can never go wrong if I decide to listen to them.
Do you listen to music when you write? What?
I tend to listen to mood instrumentals while I write. I have to be careful not to listen to anything with lyrics as they then tend appear in my writing.
What makes you laugh?
I laugh easily, so just about everything will make me laugh.
Favorite work of art or sculpture.
The Sunflower Collection by Van Gogh. For some reason they strike such an emotional response from me every time. It could be that sunflowers are my favorite flower, or it could just be the way he did the layering, building up the emotion as he painted.
How old were you when you started writing?
I a fan fiction of Redwall with all of my classmates as characters when I was in the third grade. I have been writing for almost as long as I have been reading.
Do you plan out your book with outlines and notecards? Or just write?
I use very loose outlines when I write. Most of the time the chapter names are from the outline itself. I have some sort of an idea of where I want to go, but I’m never really sure how the characters are going to get there.
Describe your perfect evening.
My perfect evening is writing a great scene, having dinner, and then getting to cuddle with my husband and two dogs. I am a simple person with simple pleasures.
Where do you get your inspiration?
My comes from everything. There is a story that I am outlining for a future story that was inspired by a note on someone’s locker. There are so many ideas out there, getting them all down on paper is the problem.
What do you do when you get a writer's block?
I take a nap if I have writer’s block. I let my mind wander and let my subconsciousness take care of the problem. When I wake up, I know what I need to write.
Who is your favorite author?
Favorite author? I’m going to need to pick a few. Dave Freer is one of my top favorite authors. Not only does he write gold, but he is wildly supportive of other writers. C.T. Phipps is another amazing author. His books are always entertaining. Ilona Andrews and Patricia Briggs can always be counted on for great stories. The list could go on and on.
Best book you ever read.
This is an impossible question. If forced to pick, I have to say Magic Kingdom for Sale – Sold by Terry Brooks might be my number one only because it got me into the fantasy realms beyond just the Tolkien styles. Then there is Dragon’s Ring by Dave Freer. That is a book worth reading. It is beautifully done and an inspiration.
Last book you read.
Goblin Wood by Hilari Bell. It is a fantasy book where the Goblins are very much the aggrieved party.
What would you do for a living if you weren’t a writer?
I would be a Quality Engineer. I know this because that is my day job.
Who is the one person who has influenced your personal life the most and why?
My husband might be the most influential person in my life, right now. He is supportive of everything I attempt and proud of what I accomplish.
If you could sit down and have a conversation with ONE person, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be and why?
I don’t know. There are a lot of people that I would like to meet. There are a lot of questions I would love to have answers to. I really don’t think I could narrow it down to one person, or even a handful of people. I guess it depends on the moment.
What advice would you give someone who aspired to be a writer?
Write. Read. Do not give up. Do not give up writing, do not give up reading, and do not give up your day job. Writing is more than just getting words on paper. It is a job and it is not easy. You will want to quit. You will feel like you have no idea what you are doing. You will be certain that you are the worst. You’re not, that’s all normal. Just keep going.
