INTERVIEW: YA Fantasy Fiction Author April Grace

April Grace

United Kingdom

Good Morning, April Grace, and welcome to Vision and Verse. Can you tell us a little about what  have you’ve written?

I’m a huge fan of all things fantasy, and I’ve been writing fantasy stories for a few years now. My debut novel, Steel Princess, is one that I started writing around twelve years ago when I was studying for my A Levels, and at the time it was a futuristic version of the UK, but it has since become a story set in a whole new world, with new characters and world building. It is about a teenage gynoid who was raised in a travelling community of humans, who quickly learns that she is the stolen princess from the Steel City, the queendom of Elysia. Silver has learned to imitate human emotion, and starts to feel things herself, that she feels she shouldn’t, and sets off on an adventure into the city, where she hunts down the cruel gynoid Queen Magnolia, who sees humans as the lesser kind. Eden, our other narrator, is a tinker in the palace who is forced to build and repair the royal and noble bots until his fingers bleed; he’s as much of a prisoner as Silver, until he finds an opportunity to help the missing princess, and find the family he was also taken from when he was small.

What is your favorite genre to write?

YA fantasy fiction will always be my favourite, anything inspired by fairytales!

Favorite food.

Pasta, and way too much chocolate!

Tea or coffee?

Neither, I only really drink cold drinks.

Pizza or ice cream?

Can I say both? Haha, it’s too hard to pick.

Wine or beer or soda or what?

Definitely soda, I drink way too much fizzy.

Where would you like to visit?

Italy, and America. I have met so many author friends online that I would love to meet, and many of them live in the US!

Favorite musical artist.

Probably ZZ Ward!

Do you listen to music when you write?  What?

Always, it just helps me focus. And it’ll usually be anything that seems interesting to listen to on YouTube.

What makes you laugh?

Films, books, Netflix series, random people’s conversations that I overhear in the school I work in! Kids can be hilarious.

Favorite work of art or sculpture.

I don’t really have one to be honest.

How old were you when you started writing?

Probably stories as a kid, but I started writing longer stories on Wattpad when I was around fifteen or sixteen.

Do you plan out your book with outlines and notecards? Or just write?

I do outline but I use notebooks. I plan a little, then write a little, then plan and write a little more.

Describe your perfect evening.

Writing in a notebook or at one of my favourite cafes, or hanging out with my family or partner.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Everywhere! Films, series I watch, books I read and more. Sometimes it comes from the lessons I sit in on as a TA.

What do you do when you get a writer's block?

I tend to just plan more, or go for a walk, or I’ll take a short break from writing and focus on my freelance editing work or read books.

Who is your favorite author?

Teri Terry, she’s brilliant.

Best book you ever read.

I couldn’t pick one, but a childhood favourite is North Child by Edith Pattou. It’s about a girl who runs off on the back of a bear, and it’s a beautiful fantasy story, one of the first books that got me into fantasy in general.

Last book you read.

Discovering Puracordis: Unearthing Secrets by Roxy Eloise, the second book in a brilliant YA dystopian series by one of my author friends. Imagine Divergent but with magic! Pretty cool.

What would you do for a living if you weren’t a writer?

I’m an editor, and also a TA in a school, so probably something education related.

Who is the one person who has influenced your personal life the most and why?

Probably my mum, she’s always been my biggest cheerleader when it comes to my writing and business ventures. But all of my family are pretty supportive when it comes to that.

If you could sit down and have a conversation with ONE person, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be and why?

My nanna died a few weeks ago, so I’d love to be able to sit down and have a full conversation with her again, but unfortunately before the dementia hit her. She would have been so interested to hear all about my books.

What advice would you give someone who aspired to be a writer?

Keep writing! And write the thing that you love the most, or it will feel forced and you might want to quit.
