INTERVIEW:Contemporary Romance Author Mary Jane Morgan

Mary Jane Morgan

Tulsa, Oklahoma

USA

Good morning, Mary Jane. It is always a pleasure to see you. What's new with you in the writing world?

I have two single-title books out as well as a completed 12-book contemporary romance series, and my first book of a brand new series is now out.

What is your favorite genre to write?

I both read and write contemporary romance

Favorite food.

My favorite food is dessert! I’m kinda serious about that. ðŸ˜Š I do love a good lasagna and fresh salmon!

Tea or coffee?

I’m pretty much a tea drinker, although I do love a Starbucks Vanilla Latte!

Pizza or ice cream?

I guess that depends on my mood. I love both. How about pizza for dinner and ice cream for dessert?

Sounds good to me. Wine or beer?

I drink wine on occasion. I never acquired a taste for beer.

Me, either, at the risk of miffing all those wildly devoted craft-beer drinkers.

Where would you like to visit when all travel bans are finally lifted?

I would love to visit Ireland. I am 3/4 Irish and have always wanted to go there. I have a feeling I’d love it!

Favorite musical artist.

Boy, am I going to show my age here, but I have always loved

John Denver.

Do you listen to music when you write?

I do not listen to music when I write. I run dialogue through my

head when I write, and listening to lyrics would probably mess

with that process.

What makes you laugh?

I am easily amused, so that is a difficult question. I do enjoy people with a good sense of humor, but I’m not a slap-stick kind of gal.

How old were you when you started writing?

I was on the paper staff of my high school’s newspaper, so I started writing then. I didn’t start writing fiction until I took a fiction-writing class in my 40’s. Even then, I didn’t make it a priority for years.

Do you plan out your book with outlines and notecards? Or just write?

I can’t seem to do the planning-out part. My characters tend to write the book as I go.

Describe your perfect evening.

I used to enjoy having dinner out with friends. These days my perfect evening is a long conversation on the phone. I do meet up with friends at the park, and we sit far apart with our masks on and visit. It sure helps me get through this rough time.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I suppose most of us writers get our inspiration from our own lives and experiences. I love to write books with horses, because I grew up with three horses and rode all over town on them. I remember a friend and I walking our horses through the service window of a burger joint for a drink.

What do you do when you get a writer's block?

I am fortunate that has not happened with me. Sometimes, though, I do need breaks to re-charge. I do a lot of reading and that helps. Yes, I read romance! I do love a good romance.

Who is your favorite author?

There are so many fabulous writers out there, that it’s very difficult to name just one. I could go on and on about all the authors I love to read. You, of course, cannot beat Nora Roberts. I also love Kait Nolan and Linda Howard, but like I said, there are so many wonderful authors out there! Thank goodness…

Best book you ever read.

Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard. Just thinking about that book makes me want to re-read it. Great romance, great humor, great suspense.

Last book you read.

I am reading Fall Back: Navy Seal Romance by Zoe York.

What would you do for a living if you weren’t a writer?

I used to be a massage therapist and thoroughly enjoyed that. I loved helping people get out of pain, and I enjoyed hearing about their lives. Pretty sure I got a few ideas for books out of those stories!

Who is the one person who has influenced your personal life the most and why?

This is a very difficult question to answer. I have had some wonderful people in my life. I have also had some not-so-wonderful people in my life. They all influenced me in one way or another.

I had a marvelous journalism teacher in high school.  She was also a published writer of nonfiction. Edith Hicks was her name. We all loved her, and I learned the basics of the trade from her. Of course, my mom wrote poems and nonfiction and was an English teacher, so I got my writing genes from her.

If you could sit down and have a conversation with ONE person, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be and why?

I would love to sit down with my father and have a long conversation with him. He could make me laugh like no one else and he was so people smart.

What advice would you give someone who aspired to be a writer?

Write, write and write some more. Writing equals growth. There’s no other way to improve your writing. You can take course after course, but if you don’t write you have wasted your time taking courses.
