INTERVIEW: Non-Fiction and Children’s Author Jenny Alexander

Jenny Alexander
Ontario, Canada

Good morning, Jenny, and welcome back to Vision and Verse.

Refresh our memory, what have you written?

13 books. I can’t believe it. I’ve written non-fiction/self-help,

word searches, children’s books, and journals.

What is your favorite genre to write?

I’ve come to really enjoy writing and

illustrating children’s books.

Favorite food.

Mexican

Tea or coffee?

Herbal tea and decaf coffee

Pizza or ice cream?

Both, because I can’t decide.

Wine or beer or soda or what?

Sparkling water and plain water

Where would you like to visit?

Europe

Favorite musical artist.

Michael W. Smith

Do you listen to music when

you write?

I don’t. I prefer a quiet room.

What makes you laugh?

My nieces, nephew, and husband.

Favorite work of art or sculpture.

I don’t have a favourite piece per se

but my favourite artists are Monet

and VanGogh.

How old were you when you started

writing?

Grade 6 or earlier

Do you plan out your book with

outlines and notecards? Or just

write?

I tend to just write.

Describe your perfect evening.

Dinner out with my husband along

with a walk after dark. We

love our after-dark walks.

Where do you get your inspiration?

My life experiences and the Lord.

What do you do when you get a

writer's block?

Don’t force it. Take a break. Come

back to it later. Seems too

easy but it helps.

Who is your favorite author?

Francine Rivers for fiction.

Best book you ever read.

Silver Boxes by Florence

 Littauer

Last book you read.

Marketing Matters by Wendy H.

Jones.

What would you do for a living

if you weren’t a writer?

Something creative, maybe an

artist or musician or perhaps

an art or journal therapist.

Who is the one person who has

influenced your personal life the

most and why?

My husband. When I met him, I

became the most me I’ve ever

been. He brings out the best in me.

If you could sit down and have a

conversation with ONE person,

living or dead, real or fictional, who

would it be and why?

I’d love to talk to my grandmother

again. She’d be so happy for

how my life has turned out and

she’d love my husband.

What advice would you give someone who aspired to be a

writer?

Don’t give up. Ever. And have realistic expectations. It takes

time to build an audience and get yourself out there. Also, don’t

be afraid to be yourself when you write. Authentic writing is the

way to go.
