TV TIME: Trigger Points (Peacock)

 

This Peacock Original series follows bomb disposal expert Lana Washington as she deals with a rash of bomb threats and amateur explosive devices in London.

For those of you old enough to remember, this series reminds of the old UXB, that followed British Military Bomb Diffusers as they try to neutralize leftover war bombs. It starred Anthony Andrews and ran on BBC. It was one of the best British series I’ve ever seen.

This one has the potential to rival UXB.

Good morning, Lance, and welcome to Vision and Verse. What have you written?

 

In Place of the Parent:  Inside Child Protective Services

Build A Better Bridge:  Social Policy for the 21st Century

Beyond Amelia:  Lesser-known Women of Yesteryear

 

In progress:  Not Your Grandmother’s Bible:  A New Look at the Good Book.

What is your favorite genre rot write?

  Nonfiction.  (However, on my bucket list is to write a fictional novel).

 

Favorite Food: 

I am not a foodie.   I like all kinds of food except Japanese and Okra

 

Tea or coffee?  

Neither

 

Wine, beer, or soda? 

Yes, to all three. In terms of consumption, diet Coke is the clear winner, with white wine a distant second. Beer gets an honorable mention during NFL playoffs.

Where would you like to visit? 

I have a timeshare in Las Vegas that I’m requested to swap for a place in New York City.   I have never been to NYC.  I also want to get to Egypt, Iceland, Tahiti, Alaska, Niagara Falls, and many other places.     

 

Favorite Musical Artist:  

Moody Blues

 

Favorite Music to work out to: 

A medley of Queen, the Beatles, and Disco

 

Do you listen to music while writing?  

Big no.

 

Favorite work of art:   

Nighthawks (aka the diner painting) by Edward Hopper.

 

I really like that one, too. How old was I when I started to write? 

I was a juvenile court social worker for 34years.  I was assigned to the court unit when I was about 27.  There was a lot of writing in that assignment.  I began writing my first book at about the same time. I finished it when I retired from the county at age 60.

 

Outlines or notecards?  

I have an outline in my head.  

  

 

Describe your perfect evening.   

My perfect morning would be snorkeling (or scuba diving) and taking pictures with a GoPro.   The perfect evening would be recapping the morning over a nice meal someone else cooked.  

 

Where do you get your inspiration?

With my books I mainly want to educate and “move the needle” toward a better way.  

I got the inspiration for my most recent book while visiting the Museum of Divingin the Florida Keys.

 

What do you do when you get Writer’s Block?  

I only get writer’s block when I’m tired.   

 

Favorite Author:   

Brian Kilmeade. He wrote Thomas Jefferson and the BarbaryPirates and similar books

 

Best book:   

City of Joy by Dominique LaPierre

 

Last book:  

Exceptional by Liz and Dick Chaney.   I am middle-of-the-road politically, but there is truth (and much falsehood) on the left and the right.

 

Who is the person who most influenced your life the most?

That’s a hard one. I grew up in an intact home with loving parents.   I don’t want to pick between them.

 

Who is the one person, dead or alive, real or fictional, you would like to sit down and  have a conversation with?

Jesus, what a question!  

Hey, that is a good answer – Jesus.  I would want to know if He thought the four gospels got His story right.  I could use the conversation as a foreword to Not Your Grandmother’s Bible.

BOOK REVIEW: The Rise by Ian Rankin

 

A gorgeous, black glass high-rise building in the best section of London with top notch security. A dead security guard. And all the occupants looks guilty. 

Ian Rankin weaves a story of the ultra rich and have-nots and how their lives entwined in a perfect tale of greed and murder.

TV TIME: The Quiz Lady (Hulu)

 

The Quiz Lady with Sandra Oh and Awkwafina was a really cute movie about two sisters who have to come up with a way to pay off their mother’s gambling debts in order to save their dog. 

And Will Ferrell was wonderful!

I punched it in. 

“Hello, there. If you're looking for Jim, this ain’t him. What can I relay?”

That took me back a couple of paces. “Ah, is he available?”

“At the moment, he’s up to his ankles in moose guts.”

“Not a bad place to be if you shot it instead of hit it with a vehicle.”

“Shot it fair and square.”

“Em, find out who it is.” I heard Pastor Jim call out.

Em? 

“Junie, hun. Why don’t you go grab that hind hoof for him?” Em asked.

“Ha. If I do, maybe there won’t be any backstrap for you when we get back to camp.”

June and Em? I had a suspicion I knew who had answered the phone. 

“Might this be the Reverend Emile Hite?”

“Good guess, son. Who are you? We should probably tell Jim.”

“Andy Andrews, the man helping Mrs. Rosskopff out.”

“Well, we should be back at camp in a couple of hours, you can call back then.”

“Reverend Hite, if it’s all the same to you, maybe you can answer my question. I listened to your podcast about being in the wilderness.”

“First off, Rev Em will do. Did you get anything from that?”

“Yes, Reverend, er, Rev Em, I did. I need to know if I’m getting a little out of line, and I’m sure you can help with that.”

“Okay. Hang on a minute. Hey, Jim. Not to worry, I’m going to handle this one for you. Tell me, Andy, what’s on your mind?”

I laid it out. What I hoped to do and why. Explaining that it would help both Mrs. Rosskopff and me. He listened without asking questions until I finished.

“Sounds as if you thought this through. If the lady in question is good with it, I don’t see any impediments. There may be one caveat. She needs help to keep the business going and you need to stay out of the city. Providing you don’t dive off into something detrimental to you both, it sounds like a win-win.”

“Detrimental to us both? I don’t follow.”

He laughed. “Let’s see. You’re a man and she’s a woman. A widow with a child and she will probably feel lonely, vulnerable. You get the picture?”

“Ah. Yes, sir. I do. But I’m not about to push on her. I’ve got enough hassles of my own. I figured to build myself a separate place to stay and there are cabins here which I can use until I get something knocked together.”

“I asked to see what you would say. If you won’t try to take advantage, there’s no reason I can see to stop you two from trying a partnership. I want a promise from you.”

“Sir?”

“No dropping the woman flat if she doesn’t like the way things are going. Furthermore, no attempting to get into her bed for scratching that infernal itch. You know the one I mean.”

“Yes, sir. I do know that one. I’ve been a victim of it a time or two. You have my word, Rev Em. On my honor, and I have some, I swear to abide by my word to you.”

“Good man. I’ll let Jim follow up with you on that. Now, I’ve got to help these two with that moose or they won’t feed me. Bye, son, don’t forget.”

The connection vanished, along with the Reverend Emile Hite. I wanted to meet the man."
