Interview with Author Susan Harris

Susan Harris
Saskatchewan, Canada

Good Morning, Susan.  Welcome to Vision and Verse, the Place for Art and Artists.  What have you written?
Four books- Golden Apples in Silver Settings (2011, White Lily Press), Little Copper Pennies: Celebrating the Life of the Canadian one-cent piece (2012, Borealis Press), Little Copper Pennies for Kids (2012, Borealis Press), Remarkably Ordinary: 20 Reflections on Living Intentionally Right Where You Are (2014, White Lily Press).

What is your favorite genre to write?
Inspirational, Non-Fiction

Favorite food.
Deep fried and salty

Tea or coffee?
Coffee

Pizza or ice cream?
How about black forest cake?

Where would you like to visit?
Monaco.

Favorite musical artist.
Shara McKee

Do you listen to music when you write?
No. Silence does it for writing.

What makes you laugh?
The cats and their antics

How old were you when you started writing?
Age 13 stands out when my English teacher commended my essays

Describe your perfect evening.
With friends, but preferably with my husband, sharing a meal, discussing world news, our lives and dreams, joking, and playing board games.

Where do you get your inspiration?
From the environment, current affairs, and my own needs.

What do you do when you get a writer's block?
I haven't found writer's block to be a concern but if I need to rev up my inspiration, I change the channel by switching writing themes or going outdoors.

Who is your favorite author?
As a child it was Enid Blyton. I don’t have a favourite author now as an adult but I read non-fiction by several authors.  I'm drawn to Joel Osteen's writing because it is more inspirational than "religious".

Best book you ever read.
The Bible.

Who is the one person who has influenced your personal life the most and why?
One of my English teachers at Advanced Level. She was an exceptional teacher and I aspired to be a teacher because of her. I left a post with a government ministry to become a high school teacher. I transfer my love to educate in my books, Little Copper Pennies and Little Copper Pennies for Kids.

If you could sit down and have a conversation with ONE person, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be and why?
Oprah Winfrey. She is a living icon of inspiration, stardom, success, charity. Oprah rose above minority status, shattered glass ceilings and paved a way for anyone who dares to dream and work hard. She took an ordinary life and made it extraordinary. And that's what I aspire to do through my newest book, Remarkably Ordinary. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JICVCQM

What advice would you give someone who aspired to be a writer? Dream, and remember that you are the most significant actor in realizing your dreams. Write about what drives your heart. Rewrite it again until it's your best, for your best is what will get you noticed.

  2. Carol, what a beautifully-laid out interview. I love how you aligned the books and the answers. Honestly, it is the most attractive piece anyone has done as far as interviews go. You are clearly artistic and give thought to your work. It's a pleasure chatting with you, and thank you so very much for introducing me to your friends. I, too, wish you the best in your writing and blogging.
    Live extraordinarily.

  4. Carol,
Thanks for interviewing Susan. I enjoyed the variety of questions you asked and the way they allowed me to peek into Susan's life. Susan, Enid Blyton was my favourite author as a child too :) Most people have no clue who she is. May God continue to bless and use both of you ladies.

    1. Isn't Carol a great interviewer, Ruth? Anyone who knows Enid Blyton occupies a special place in my heart, and I just added you there. I concur with your observation that not many (in North America at least ) knows about her. My birth land was colonised by Britian, and so the British authors, education and lifestyle became mine. Wishing you a day that's lived to your fullest. Susan
