Here is an excerpt taken from Chapter 1:

Eric and his housemate Herbie were sleeping soundly in their beds beneath the quilted bed covers when Norman Mail Pigeon arrived. He hammered like a woodpecker with Eric’s door knocker.
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK! ‘Air-mail letter addressed to Eric Seagull, Rock-Face Nest, St. Mary’s Bay, Brixham in sunny South Devon,’ cooed Norman, wiping his hot brow on his purple braces.
No answer.
BANG! BANG! BANG! ‘Open the door!’ Norman shrilled impatiently.
No reply.
‘WAKEY! WAKEY! Lazy bones,’ Norman cooed. ‘It’s time to get up. I know you can hear me,’ Norman cooed again, his voice hoarse. His spindly legs were slowly bowing beneath the weight of his heavy green mailbag.

C-R-E-A-K! Using one toe, Eric lifted the rusty latch. As the door inched open, his beak appeared followed by a mop of untidy spiky yellow hair. His bushy grey eyebrows arched. His eyes, black as a whale’s fin, peered out as the early morning sun rose above the horizon.
